Join us for our special June, 2014 Webinar with Dr. Manuel Pastor, Director of the USC Program for  Environmental and Regional Equity, discuss findings from a new report, "An Agenda for Equity: A Framework for Building a Just Transportation System in Los Angeles County."

Los Angeles is reinventing itself: from sprawl to community development, from car dependence to transit orientation, from municipal fiefdoms to functional regionalism, from inequality to equity. But to move from a vision to the reality of the Next Los Angeles, it is vital to collaborate on new policies that invest with equity-or, what scholars Manuel Pastor and Chris Benner call: "Just Growth." Indeed, research shows that regions with more equitable development result in more sustainable economic growth for the region. That is, social inclusion is the key to growth, and should not just be an afterthought.

Transportation is one of the best places to invest with equity: doing so connects people to jobs, affects our overall health and environments, and, most relevant to SCANPH members, generates transit-oriented development (TOD). TOD can get people out of their cars and onto transit by locating housing and jobs closer to bus stops and train stations. But, it can also increase real estate values which displaces low-income residents and small business owners. It is here that developers and transportation equity advocates can find common ground and new solutions that can help lead to the preservation and new construction of affordable housing in our region.

Join us on June 24 to hear Dr. Manuel Pastor, Director of the USC Program for  Environmental and Regional Equity, discuss findings from a new report, "An Agenda for Equity: A Framework for Building a Just Transportation System in Los Angeles County." This work aims to spark new conversations that bring together the usual and not-so-usual suspects and present a shared framework-Just Growth-for collective action to ensure equitable housing development in L.A.
