Title:Assessing Public Use of Spatial Data: A Graduate's Experience in Long Beach CA.
Keywords:PGIS, GIS, Critical GIS, Surveys, CBO, Comunity Based Organizations
Type:Paper
Abstract:This is a presentation of Master's Research completed in May of 2014.  The research focuses on Participatory Geographic Information Systems (PGIS) or focuses on how community based organizations (CBOs) use geographic information.  The City of Long Beach provided a perfect landscape to study Participatory GIS because it has a large population and history of community development.  This research involved a mixed methodology: conceptualization, interviews and surveys.  The interviews covered five distinct subject areas to show that connected organizations are more likely to use maps and geographic information.  The research also employed a 29 question survey.  The results of the survey described a process of organization where predicating map usage is tightly linked to a community's level of development and the type of organization under study.  Finally, this research proposes that new research qualitatively trace usage using a broad population.
