Get the Word Out - The 3-Foot Law Starts in September

The Three Feet for Safety Act will finally go into effect on September 16, 2014. The law requires motorists to give at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist traveling in the same direction. Existing law requires motorists to pass bicyclists while keeping a "safe distance." The new law defines "safe distance" as three feet. If not enough space is available, the motorist must slow down and pass when no danger is present to the bicyclist.

One key to making the new law effective is to make sure the driving public knows about it. LACBC has collaborated with AAAWire Media, and CalBike to create an "I Give 3 Feet" graphic for use to publicize the new law. This graphic can be downloaded from Wire Media here. We encourage all media outlets (big or small), bicycle groups, and interested parties to download and utilize this graphic, along with the associated bullet points about the law.

Key points to include with the Three Foot for Safety Act graphic are:

  • Existing law requires motorists to pass bicyclists while keeping a "safe distance."
  • This new law defines "safe distance" as three feet when passing bicyclists traveling in the same direction.
  • If not enough space is available, the motorist must slow down and pass when no danger is present to the bicyclist.
  • Violators will face a $35 fine, as well as a $220 fine if a collision occurs.
  • The law takes effect September 16, 2014.
AAA has printed 10,000 window clings for public distribution utilizing the same graphic, and their roadside assistance will be handing out tip cards with the graphic starting in September. Our partners at CalBike are also offering two sticker designs to help promote the new law. You can request the window clings and the CalBike stickers directly from CalBike by following this link: https://calbike.org/bulkgiveme3form

Our work with AAA and CalBike is made possible thanks to the support of LACBC members and donors. Not a member? Become an LACBC member or make a donation today.

Updates from Around L.A. County: Study Favors Bike Lanes on the Glendale-Hyperion Bridge

Glendale-Hyperion Bridge: A city study favors the sidewalk/bike lanes alternative on the Glendale-Hyperion Bridge. The study finds that a 3 lane + 2 sidewalks + bike lanes configuration has a negligible effect on traffic along the corridor. Read more on Streetsblog L.A.

Wilmington: New bike lanes have been striped on South Figueroa Street in Wilmington. The new South Figueroa Street bike lanes currently run 0.9 miles from Mauretania Street to F Street, but will eventually extend 2.0 miles from Lomita Boulevard to Harry Bridges Boulevard. Read more on Streetsblog L.A.

South Bay: A new bike path entrance will connect Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach. A wall on the path presently separates the two cities but is slated to be destroyed this October. A parking lot will be replaced by a small park by May of next year to welcome people on bikes and on foot into the City Redondo Beach. Read more in The Beach Reporter.

What's Ringing Our Bike Bells: Local 86-Year-Old Woman Wants Alley Repaved for a Smoother Ride
Photo: Mel Melcon, Los Angeles Times

L.A.'s crumbling infrastructure is making it harder to get around. Steve Lopez of the Los Angeles Times profiles an 86-year-old woman named Louise Bianco who just wants an alley repaved so that she can ride safely to the Orange Line bike path.

We're inspired by Louise's tenacity and commitment to riding. The article states she has 14,922 miles on her current trike's odometer. Her granddaughter tells us she had 60,000+ miles on her old bike. Ride on, Louise!
