40 Spot Improvements Coming Your Way

Last week, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) committed to prioritizing 40 bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements on high injury streets. These spot improvements were chosen based on data from the Department of Public Health that analyzed crash data to identify high injury corridors and intersections for bicyclists and pedestrians. While timelines will vary, the SFMTA has committed to getting all 40 of these done in 24 months, which means there will be lots of exciting new projects in the works!

See the full list of 40 spot improvements and suggest your own.

Streetsblog Founder to Speak About SF Livable Streets

Golden WheelOn July 15, we will be honored to have the Streetsblog founder and livable streets guru, Aaron Naparstek, giving the keynote speech at our 2014 Golden Wheel Awards. Naparstek has traveled the globe reporting on the livable streets movement, and will be coming to San Francisco to share his stories and inspiration for all of us at the Golden Wheel Awards. Here’s just a preview of his ideas on biking, safe streets, San Francisco and what it will take for our city to be a truly great place for biking. Get your Golden Wheel ticket today!

Last Minute Funding Secured for Street Safety

Your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition staff, along with other Vision Zero partners such as WalkSF and Chinatown Community Development Center youth, were literally roaming the City Hall corridors last week, advocating for funding to be added back for Vision Zero, so that our city streets can be safer for everyone.

While we weren’t able to convince the supervisors to backfill the entire Vehicle License Fee hole (which is about $13 million for the 2016 fiscal year), we did receive great support from various supervisors who requested funding for Vision Zero projects in their respective districts. See the list of funded projects, and note which Supervisors dug into the budget at the eleventh hour to help fund street safety.

Buffered Bike Lanes Coming to Howard Street

Bike LaneLast week, the SF Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) held an Open House to present information on their upcoming plans for Howard Street and 6th Street. To complement the new buffered lanes on Folsom Street, there will be a similar treatment on Howard Street from 6th to 10th to be implemented by this Fall. As part of the Central SoMa Plan, they will also be looking into extending these bike lanes further – potentially all the way to the Embarcadero. There will also be additional traffic calming measures coming to 6th Street to improve pedestrian safety from Market to Howard. Read more about our work on these key corridors to get you safely to and from SoMa, and sign up for the campaign today.

Video: Children Have Lost the Freedom to Roam

Children lost freedom to roamIn 1969, the percentage of children walking or biking to school was nearly 50%. By 2009, it had fallen to just 13%. Why is this the case? This recent StreetFilms video talks about the environment we have built, which accomodates cars before people and thus decreases the amount kids are able to walk or bike safely around town. This short video is a call to create increasingly livable streets that make it safe and comfortable for children to bike and walk to school – more like the good old days!
