Dear Kevin, THIS WEEK:
It's the last week of the June Rainbow Grocery Discount. ACTION NEEDED TODAY: Don’t Let Supervisors Back Down on Vision Zero We just learned that City leaders are wavering on their commitment to your safety. Because the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors decided to hold off on a major new funding initiative for safe streets – punting the Vehicle License Fee vote until 2016 – there is a $10 million hole in the City’s transportation budget specifically for Vision Zero projects – that means bicycle and pedestrian safety will not move forward on some of the highest-injury corridors in our city. Call the Supervisors on the Budget Committee, and our Vision Zero Leaders, who say they support Vision Zero and urge them to restore this much-needed funding for safety. Calls must be made today and tomorrow to impact their budget decisions! Jane Kim: (415) 554-7970 Pedal With Pride This Week Join us tonight for our happy hour, mingle and parade decorating fun. It’s Pride week, and our city’s busiest bikeway is filled with rainbow flags. Here at the SF Bicycle Coalition we’ve packed the calendar with LGBTQ events, including bike classes and rides. The good times keep on rolling, and there’s still a lot more “byke” fun to be had:
See all the pedaling pride details here. Get Your Ticket to the Golden Wheel Awards Tickets are going fast for one of bicycling's hottest summer events: The Golden Wheel Awards on Tuesday, July 15. The SF Bicycle Coalition’s Golden Wheel Awards is a major fundraiser for our Connecting the City work. At the awards, we honor those individuals and groups who are making a difference in transforming San Francisco into a more people and bike-friendly place. We are also pleased to honor Officer Matt Friedman, the man behind the @SFPDBikeTheft Twitter account and Dr. Shirley Johnson, a leader in expanding bicycle access on public transportation through the BIKES ONboard campaign. This year’s Keynote Speaker is Aaron Naparstek, Streetsblog founder and livable streets guru. Get your tickets or become a sponsor today. Why Protected Bikeways Matter A new academic study of protected bicycle lanes was released earlier this month – the first ever for the United States. This study, prepared for the National Institute for Transportation and Communities, examined eight different locations throughout the country by collecting extensive data and surveys. One of the eight locations was right here in San Francisco, on Fell and Oak Streets. We took a deeper look at the data collected and devled into why protected bicycle lanes matter both across the country and here in San Francisco On Thursday, Weigh in on the Howard Street Bikeway Plan Less than a year ago, hundreds of people passionately urged the City to make Folsom Street safe. In record time, the City responded by implementing a partially green, buffered bike lane from 11th to 4th Streets. Since then, we have continued advocating for the same improvements to be duplicated on Howard Street, bringing us closer to Vision Zero by making SoMa’s main couplet safe for people biking. Next week, the City will hold the Howard Street Buffered Bike Lane Open House. The project includes both a buffered bike lane from 6th to 10th Streets and additional pedestrian improvements. Join us this Thursday at 6PM to find our more about the project. Biking with Your Baby or Toddler Class This Saturday Back by popular demand: our family biking class on how to bike with your baby or toddler. On Saturday, join SF Bicycle Coalition staff for a free family biking workshop that covers best practices for biking with you baby or toddler. From how to know if they’re old enough to ride with you to what kind of equipment to have, we’ll help you and your growing family get rolling. RSVP for the class today. Video: San Francisco Loves Biking In this video, velocitizen and former SF Bicycle Coalition Policy Director, Andy Thornley, talks about how San Francisco loves biking during the Dutch King's Day ride on April 26,2014. Watch the video to see why he thinks the bicycle is such an important part of San Francisco's past, present and future.
