Bike Month Keeps Rolling Along
Wow, what a Bike Month we’ve been having! In honor of the 20th Anniversary of Bike to Work Day, SF Bicycle Coalition members helped us pack the calendar with more than 85 bike-tastic events. There are still 10 days left in Bike Month and plenty of events!
Here’s a highlight of this week’s Bike Month Events: Ride of Silence for those we’ve lost; California Historical Society shows off its bike collection; a panel discussion on how crowdfunding local bike projects; Bike by sock donations with St. Anthony’s; and a survey ride of the city. Plus, more than a dozen more great rides and events. See sfbike.org/events for full list. Complete Streets For Columbus Avenue
The City recently hosted an open house to present on the Columbus Avenue Neighborhood Improvement Project. There were over 100 participants from the neighborhood who were greeted by staff from multiple agencies to answer questions and listen to community feedback. We are encouraged to see a high-level of coordination by the City, and in the end, the message is clear: We want Complete Streets for Columbus Avenue! Read more about the proposals here, which include a buffered bike lane for parts of Columbus Avenue, and write a letter of support to push for stronger bicycle improvements. Transportation 2030: Speak up for Your Streets “Let’s make it easier, safer and faster to get around San Francisco.” This is the City’s message for Transportation 2030, the strategic infrastructure investment program proposed for the November 2014 ballot. Transportation 2030 will invest in better roads, improved transit and safer streets throughout San Francisco, making it faster, safer and easier to get around. Each of the Supervisors will be holding an open house to present information and hold a Q&A. Click on the link here to view the dates and locations of each open house. We encourage you to attend, ask questions and speak up for how this investment can make biking a real option to get around our city. Bike to Worship Week Begins on Sunday
Do you bike to church, mosque, temple, satsang, synagogue, or any other place of worship? As part of Bike Month in May, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition members are working in partnership with the San Francisco Interfaith Council to create a Bike to Worship Week from Sunday, May 25 to Sunday, June 1, 2014. Throughout the week various congregations will celebrate biking to their place of worship. See the full list of participants and dates here.
Announcing San Francisco’s 2014 Bike-Friendly Businesses
More and more businesses are joining the movement for better biking in San Francisco, which made this year’s Bike-Friendly Business awards the most competitive yet! We’re proud to announce this year’s Bike-Friendly Business award winners: Rackspace, Liftopia, Arizmendi Bakery and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Read more about the winners and why we selected them.
Free Bike Education Classes at Your Workplace
We’ve partnered with SFMTA to bring free commuter bike classes to San Francisco workplaces. Commute by Bike classes cover the basics of the rules of the road, street safety and commuting to work, and can be tailored to your office’s needs. Email paolo@sfbike.org to get your office rolling.
Video: Hal Grades Your Bike Locking 2014
Streetsfilm is bringing back their wildly popular Hal Grades Your Bike Locking series. NYC bike guru Hal Ruzal and Streetfilm's Clarence Erickson walk around the city assessing bike locking techniques, with hilarious and shocking results. See what an A looks like, as well as a collection of D’s and F’s.
