Dear Kevin, THIS WEEK:
NEWS & UPDATES Great News! Market Street Improvements We’re excited to announce that all the hard work of our members, staff, and community leaders has convinced the City that we need bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements to Market Street as soon as possible. Starting this summer, SFMTA will be rolling out a series of Market Street safety improvements. The plan calls for red transit-only lanes and increased enforcement of existing turn restrictions, with funding also secured for expanded restrictions for private automobiles from 5th to Montgomery as early as Winter ‘14/15. Read more on our most recent blog post. Tell the City Not to Water Down Polk Street Project Next week, the SFMTA is expected to present an even weaker Polk Street design at their final open house on Wednesday, March 26. Since it is the best North/South bike route, we cannot overstate the importance of Polk Street. We still envision a corridor that is safer for all users — from residents to visitors to merchants — and a key component of this vision is continuous and protected bike lanes. To make a safer Polk Street reality, we need you to address key decision makers like Supervisor David Chiu this week and ask them to stand up for what the community wants and needs. TAKE ACTION: Send a letter to David Chiu and other leaders today. Interested in becoming more involved? Don't miss next Monday's Central City Committee Meeting at 5PM at Lombardi Sports to organize with fellow members for this very critical campaign. New Bike Lanes in the Presidio Last week we joined Supervisors Mark Farrell and John Avalos in welcoming new bike lanes in the Presidio. This gap closure on Arguello now makes biking towards Crissy Field or heading south to Golden Gate Park much more comfortable, creating more space and an easier turn. As we also near the repaving of nearly the entire length of Arguello in 2016, we will be pushing for safer bike lanes with the help of our members. Want to be a part of this campaign? Email janice@sfbike.org to get involved. Special thanks to the SF County Transportation Authority, Presidio Trust, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and National Park Service for making biking better! Bicycle Ambassador Training This Thursday Learn how to flex your advocacy muscle at our Bicycle Ambassador training. Get up to date on current campaigns and learn how to sign up new members. This training will also prepare you to volunteer at races, festivals, Service Stations, special events and more. Our Bicycle Ambassadors recruited nearly 1,500 new and renewing members last year; come support this crucial part of our work! Write margaret@sfbike.org to sign up. Light snacks will be provided. Looking forward to seeing you there! Save the Date - Bike to Work Day is Thursday, May 8! The 20th anniversary of Bay Area Bike to Work Day is less than two months away! Some highlights of what to expect for the biggest bike event of the year:
Mark Thursday, May 8 on your calendars now! Panhandle Community Opportunity Fund Neighborhood groups are hard at work reaching out to the community on ways to improve the Panhandle. The first meeting was held this past Saturday, and there will be two more workshops in March in order to prepare a grant application to the Community Opportunity Fund Program. We’ve heard from our members and we all know that the Panhandle is getting more and more packed every day; 96% of our survey respondents said they access Golden Gate Park through the Panhandle when biking or walking. This grant gives us a real opportunity to decrease conflicts and make biking better. Come to these meetings and share your ideas!
The Sewer Ride Returns! Ever wonder what's going on down there in the sewer? The tour will feature twelve adventurous miles of cycling across four different watersheds, focusing on history, geology, infrastructure and public art. This ride is led by SF Bicycle Coalition member-volunteer and supported by the hard working folks at Building Resources, the city's premier scrap yard at the mouth if Islais Creek. The ride will land at ReRoom, the city's newest art exhibition hall. RSVP required. Final Approval for Potrero Avenue Next Week! On Friday, March 28 and after a year of community outreach, the SFMTA Board will hear for approval the Potrero Avenue project. The proposed project includes wider sidewalks, partially protected bike lanes and a painted transit lane, improving the experience of thousands of people. If you live on or near Potrero or use it, mark your calendars and email chema@sfbike.org to come and speak up for a safer Mission and Potrero Hill. MEMBERS ONLY: Take the 2014 Member Survey Now!
