THIS WEEK:

NEWS & UPDATES

Rally for Vision Zero Today at Noon!

Vision ZeroPlease join us on your lunch break today to raise your voice for safe streets. The SF Bicycle Coalition and other groups frustrated by the lack of action on our streets will rally at noon at City Hall to urge City leaders to commit to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries over the next 10 years.

Thanks to more than 100 members who showed up last week for a standing-room-only Police Commission/Board of Supervisors’ hearing. Thanks to you, the Police Chief committed to Vision Zero and pledged actions to move the department to full, fair treatment of people biking and walking and safer streets. Read more about what the Chief calls “a seismic shift in poilcy” here.

Meanwhile, Mayor Lee shared his support for Vision Zero in last week’s State of the City address — now we need to see him commit to specific actions and resources beyond a weak call to “Be Nice”.

Now, all eyes are on Ed Reiskin, head of the SF Municipal Transportation Agency, who acknowledged last week that these traffic deaths and severe injuries are preventable. We’ll be speaking up at the MTA Board meeting — after the rally, at 1pm at City Hall — and urging them to prevent more mayhem by re-designing the most dangerous locations, most of which are in SOMA & Tenderloin. Join us in saying “Enough is Enough!”

Final Wiggle Open House on Wednesday

A calmer Scott Street is finally on its way, but it needs your voice of support. As part of the Wiggle Neighborhood Greenway, the City has proposed a southbound traffic diverter on Scott Street at Fell Street. The diversion will reduce auto traffic but still allow for bicycles to continue comfortably onto the Wiggle. The plan also includes raised crosswalks to elevate pedestrians crossing the street along with other traffic-calming measures.

Come see the designs and support the City’s bold move to bring traffic diverters to San Francisco. The final open house will be on Wednesday, January 22 at the Electrical Workers Union Hall (55 Fillmore Street). With the open house format, you are welcome to stop by anytime between 5PM and 7:30PM to make sure the City doesn’t back down on this important project.

Support More Pilots on Market Street

Market StreetIn 2009 the SFMTA and other City agencies successfully implemented auto restriction pilots on Market Street that led to dramatic increases in bike ridership and Muni speeds. With the Better Market Street project several years away from construction, near-term improvements, such as expanded auto restrictions will immediately make Market Street feel safer and more inviting for residents, employees and visitors.

Expanded restrictions are already part of the Better Market Street plan, and are an easy and cost-effective way to improve Muni speeds and bike and pedestrian safety. Show your support by sending a letter to the SFMTA Board and Supervisors Chiu and Kim calling for a safer Market Street! To get involved in future Market Street meetings, events, and hearings, email Paolo at paolo@sfbike.org.

Arguello Boulevard Committee Meeting on Friday

Arguello Boulevard has been home to Sunday Streets, one of our 25 Energizer Stations from last year's Bike To Work Day, plenty of restaurants to satisfy an international palate, and of course, the main bike connection from Golden Gate Park up to the Presidio. The exciting news is that this mile-long length of Arguello is set to be repaved by the City in 2016! Join your fellow members this Friday and brainstorm how to make the biking experience more inviting and enjoyable for people of all ages. We will be meeting on January 24 at 4:30PM at Velo Rouge (798 Arguello Blvd). Can’t make it? Email Janice at janice@sfbike.org to stay involved.

VIDEO: Walk at Her Own Risk, Jikaiah Stevens’ Story

Walk at Her Own RiskLast year Jikaiah Stevens’ life was changed forever when she was struck by a car at a crosswalk in the Tenderloin. The driver was not cited or even ticketed, an all too common trend in injury collisions involving pedestrians. This emotional and well done film was shown at last week’s Police Commission meeting on pedestrian safety. It was so compelling that the SFPD Chief committed to opening the case up again and reinvestigating.
