NEWS & UPDATES

Support the SF Bicycle Coalition for “Giving Tuesday”

Give TodayToday, December 3, the SF Bicycle Coalition is joining thousands of nonprofits across the country to promote “Giving Tuesday,” a day to support the organizations and causes that sustain our communities.  On this Giving Tuesday, please support the SF Bicycle Coalition with a special gift of $25, 50, $100 or more to help ensure that San Francisco decision-makers don’t back down in making transformative safety improvements to the City’s bicycle network. We’re gearing up for more action in 2014, focusing on major corridors like Polk, Market and 2nd Streets.

We recently mailed our members our Pedal Strong Report that outlines our vision to Connect the City with 100 miles of crosstown protected bikeways. We’ve gained buy-in from the City for key segments of this plan, but we need your financial support today, Giving Tuesday, to make sure that City leaders do not back down on these commitments.

We want to thank each of our members and supporters for providing the SF Bicycle Coalition  with financial resources, volunteer time and activism to make bicycling in San Francisco the wonderful experience it can--and should be--every day. You can download a copy of our our 2014 Pedal Strong Report via this link.

Folsom Street Green, Buffered Bikeway on the Ground!

Folsom Buffered Bike LaneIf you rode Folsom Street this morning, you’ve already experienced the joy of riding on the new buffered bikeway! The SFMTA has been busy this week revamping Folsom Street with this great new pilot that will offer a safer route for this bustling bike route.

Your SF Bicycle Coalition worked hard to get this pilot bikeway on the ground, and we are there every step of the way, ensuring that the design works for you. We pushed for green paint at the intersections, and we’re thrilled to see that safety element being added today. We’ll continue to monitor this pilot to see how the design works.

Thanks to the thousands of people who joined us in calling for Safer SoMa Streets! Up next on our campaign: Howard Street and 2nd Street! Support this ongoing campaign at sfbike.org/donate.

Big Hearing on the Future of SF Biking This Wednesday

SFMTA FundingThis Wednesday at 10:30AM, the Board of Supervisors’ Budget Committee will be holding a hearing to discuss the future of biking in San Francisco. Thanks to Supervisor Eric Mar for calling for this hearing to discuss how to implement the SF Municipal Transportation Agency’s 2013-2018 Bicycle Strategy. Bike projects are cheap and incredibly cost-effective, yet San Francisco is currently starving the budget for biking projects -- and won’t get real about investing in biking unless key decision-makers hear from you.

TONIGHT: Last Push for a Safer Columbus Avenue

Columbus AvenueWe’re in the final stage of getting the City to include wider, more inviting sidewalks as part of the repaving in 2014 on Columbus Avenue. There are all different ways to get involved! Learn more about our plan and send a letter to Supervisor Chiu asking him to prioritize how we can make Columbus safe and beautiful for all. Then, come to the meeting tonight at 6:30PM at Caffe Greco (423 Columbus Ave) to meet up with the local Columbus Beautiful group. And if you’ve got time, get others on board with some volunteer outreach. Talk to Janice to get involved, or just stop by tonight. We don’t have much time so, the City needs to hear from you today about how Columbus Ave can be better for those who walk, bike and take public transit.

Crucial Hearing on Bikes and Small Business on Monday

On Monday, December 9 at 4:30PM (City Hall, Room 400) the SFMTA and Small Business Commission will be having a joint hearing on the City’s transportation goals and the economic vitality of San Francisco’s small businesses. If you own or manage a small business in San Francisco and recognize the importance of great streets for walking, biking, and taking transit, the SFMTA and Small Business Commission needs to hear from you!

  • Can you speak at the hearing about how great transportation options help your business? Email paolo@sfbike.org to let us know.

  • Can’t make it but still want to be heard? Send a letter to paolo@sfbike.org to voice your support for better streets and small business. We’ll submit your letter at the hearing on December 9th!
