Folsom Bikeway Underway -- Thanks to You! Last Tuesday, the SFMTA Board of Directors unanimously approved the much-needed Folsom Street Complete Street Pilot project, which will remove one traffic lane on Folsom Street from 4th Street to 11th Street to create a wider, green, buffered bike lane. The project is scheduled to be in the ground by December! The Folsom pilot is the result of thousands of San Franciscans, fed up with the tragedies caused by poorly designed streets, emphatically demanding a safer South of Market for people biking from City leaders over the past months. Our next goal is to persuade the City to expand the pilot beyond 4th Street to the waterfront and to duplicate the effort on Howard Street, another dangerous SoMa corridor. Help us continue making SoMa safer by joining our next monthly Safer SoMa Central City committee meeting on December 16 at 5:30PM at the SF Bicycle Coalition office. Our Bayview Bike Builds Already Given Out 500 Bikes As we extend our advocacy efforts to make corridors like Oakdale Avenue safer for biking, we have been told time and time again how the lack of community bike shops (like the Bike Kitchen and the SF Yellow Bike Project) in outer neighborhoods like the Bayview-Hunters Point and the Excelsior make it difficult for people to acquire and upkeep a bicycle. This motivated the SF Bicycle Coalition to seek new ways to get people on the saddle in these neighborhoods. Our solution: teaming with local community-based organizations for Community Bike Builds, where we refurbish and give out bikes to San Franciscans who will benefit most from free transportation. In partnership with POWER, We’ve already given more than 500 bikes through our events! Our next Bayview Bike Build is tentatively scheduled for December 7. Visit sfbike.org/bikebuild to see how you can help! Columbus Avenue Needs Your Support! Getting around Columbus Avenue is often an exercise in gymnastics, with narrow sidewalks and unpredictable movement of pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles. The great news is that in 2014, the City will be repaving Columbus from Washington to Filbert. Help us make sure that wider sidewalks and improved bicycle safety are a priority reflected in the plans. Sign our petition today and urge Supervisor Chiu to prioritize safety for all and volunteer to help do outreach! Contact Janice at janice@sfbike.org to get involved.

VIDEO: Cycling Copenhagen, Through North American Eyes
As 213 winds down, we decided to dig through the Streetfilms archives to find our favorite films over the years. Without a doubt, Cycling Copenhagen, Through North American Eyes, is one of the best. This short film showcases all the ways that Copenhagen has prioritized biking: from separated bikeways to bike counters to great bike parking. You’ll probably recognize a few folks you know (hint: SF Bicycle Coalition’s Executive Director spent some times there). Take a look!
