NEWS & UPDATES

Winterfest is This Sunday! Score Bikes, Art, & More!

Winterfest 2013

Winterfest — the biggest party we throw all year — is finally here and we're excited to celebrate with you! Whether you are volunteering, bidding on auction items or just having a good time with your fellow bike-loving friends, Winterfest is the best way you can celebrate our terrific San Francisco bike community. Your support keeps the SF Bicycle Coalition’s wheels turning to make sure our streets are safe and inviting for your daily travels.

Take a sneak peak at the great selection of Winterfest Bikes! We’ve just posted the 18 awesome new rides waiting for your bids in the auction! From city rides to road bikes — there’s a bike for any type of rider.

Have you checked out the Winterfest Art Show yet? We’re thrilled to bring you 65 great pieces wonderfully curated by Victoria Heilweil and generously donated by local artists who are using their talents to bring better biking to San Francisco! New this year, a great collection of bikey art prints on sale for just $25!

Members - Bring a Friend to Winterfest!

Do you have friends who are not yet members of the SF Bicycle Coalition, but would like to come with you to Winterfest? Invite your friends to use the code “MemberFriend” when purchasing their Winterfest tickets online and they’ll receive our Friends of Member ticket.

Online ticket sales ends on Friday, 11/01 at noon. Avoid the lines, get yours today!
Tickets at the door increase to $25 for members and $50 for non-members (includes membership!)

Last Call for Winterfest Volunteers! Be a volunteer at the event and get in for free! As a longtime volunteer said last week, “This is the best party of the year!” Come be a part of this great event’s success when you join us as a volunteer. We’re still looking for a few more eager member-volunteers to come help park bikes, monitor the auction and more! Volunteers get entry to the party and one free beverage ticket ($30 value). Check out the details and sign up today, because sign-ups are about to close!

Winterfest Sponsor of the Week: Raise a glass with us Sunday to toast New Belgium Brewing for their year-round support of better biking in SF and around the country!

BART Board Permanently Lifts Bike Ban!

Bikes on BARTThe BART Board voted a unanimous 9-0 decision to lift the bike ban permanently at the October 24 board meeting, allowing 24/7 access to bicycles on BART!  We have been working towards this decision for decades, and it would not have been possible without the outpouring of support from our dedicated members and our allies at East Bay Bicycle Coalition, Bikes ONboard, and the great work done by BART staff in their rider survey. Celebrate this big victory with us at Winterfest on November 3, and read more about the news here.

Help Light Up the Night

This Sunday marks the end of Daylight Savings time, and the subsequent launch of our annual Light Up the Night campaign. We’re proud to have once again partnered with the City to distribute front and rear bicycle lights to hundreds of people who are biking and night  without them. And we need your help to make this year’s campaign a success! This is one of the most fun and rewarding volunteer opportunities of the year. In November and December, we’ll be hosting four pop-stations at secret locations across San Francisco. For more details and to sign up to volunteer, go to: sfbike.org/lights.

One Victory for SoMa Streets!

Safe SoMa StreetsThanks to everyone who attended last Wednesday’s Folsom Complete Street Pilot Project Community Meeting. The eagerly anticipated proposal outlined an 18-month pilot, which includes a separated bike lane on Folsom from 4th to 11th Streets.

The Folsom Pilot is a great victory, but much remains to be done, particularly on Division, Howard and 13th Street. Continue letting the Mayor and the Supervisors know that the inadequate and deadly infrastructure that plagues the streets in and around South of Market must be addressed immediately. If you wish to be involved with our Safer SoMa Member Committee, contact chema@sfbike.org.

A Safer Potrero Under Threat: Take Action

Despite another pedestrian tragically killed this week on Potrero Avenue, the City continues to back pedal on safety improvements to Potrero Avenue due to the pressure from an anti-pedestrian lobby. The City has announced an unprecedented fourth community Open House on November 7 from 6-8PM at the SF General Hospital Cafeteria, 1001 Potrero Avenue, 2nd Floor.

We are calling on all our members to email the Mayor and Supervisors Campos and Cohen and let them know that Potrero needs to be safe for everyone. We also want as many neighbors to make it out to the community open house and speak up for a safer Potrero. Contact chema@sfbike.org if you want to get involved.

Vote Today for Our Board of Directors

Vote for the Board of DirectorsWe need you to cast your vote today in our annual Board of Directors election. TWe rely on the voices of our members to decide who will be responsible for ensuring that the SF Bicycle Coalition achieves its mission of promoting the bicycle for everyday transportation. Each year, half of the 15-member board is elected to a two-year term by our membership -- that's you. Your vote is an important signal of confidence in the Board. Please read the candidate statements and vote today. Voting ends Wednesday, November 13. If you have trouble voting, please contact boardvoting@sfbike.org.

Welcome to our New Discount Partners

This week, we’re pleased to announce two new discount partners, Motostrano and Farmgirl Flowers:

Motostrano, one of San Francisco’s newest bike shops, is offering current SF Bicycle Coalition members a 10% discount on parts & accessories. Motostrano is conveniently located at 1452 Bush, between Polk and Van Ness. Peruse their sleek new store and check out their line of Vanmoof bicycles (or bid on one in the bike auction at Winterfest!).

Farmgirl Flowers is bucking the trend of imported flowers, lots of waste and a big carbon footprint by buying locally grown flowers and delivering your flowers via pedal power whenever possible in San Francisco. Current members will receive a 10% discount off your arrangement. It’s the perfect bicycle-friendly treat for your next celebration!

VIDEO: Hal Grades Your Bike Locking

Bike LockingWe’re busy at work on our anti bike theft campaign, meeting with City officials, working on a voluntary bike registration program and teaching thousands of people how to properly lock their bikes. So, we thought we’d repost one of the most popular bike videos of all time: Hal Grades Your Bike Locking! How does your locking measure up? Are you an A student?
