Bike the Strike and Get Ready for the BART Bike Ban Lift

Bike the StrikeWhile the entire Bay Area awaits word on the BART Strike, we are doing our part to help keep San Franciscans rolling by encouraging people to try biking to work. If your coworker, friend or family feels inconvenienced by this strike, now is the perfect time to encourage them to consider biking. If possible, offer to ride to work with them to help ease them into the world and joys of bike commuting. Do you need to cross the bay with your bike? Check out our Bike the Strike page to find alternatives for combining bikes and other transit options. Happy pedaling!

In other big BART news, as soon as the strike is over, you’ll be able to bring your bike on board any time of day. The five-month trial to lift the Rush-Hour Bike Ban goes into effect as soon as BART is up and running again. Your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has worked hard for decades to open up more bike access on BART, and we’re thrilled that our long-term advocacy (along with the work of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition’s and Bikes on BART group) now means you can bring your bike on board any time of day.

Here are a few simple rules to follow to make sure this long pilot runs as smoothly as the smaller ones. Thanks for being a great bike ambassador for bikes on BART!

HUGE WIN! Funding Approved for 2nd, Mansell and Deadly Masonic Avenue

Another Victory for Better Biking!Last week, the San Francisco Transportation Authority unanimously approved funding for safety improvements to Masonic Avenue, 2nd Street and Mansell Street. This is a huge win for safer, more complete San Francisco streets — especially on Masonic Avenue, one of San Francisco’s most deadly streets.

In the last five years, 122 people have been injured and two people killed, just on 2/3 of a mile of Masonic. Thanks to last week’s funding decision, this deadly corridor will be transformed into a safer place for all road users.

For more than five years, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition members and staff have been working for critical safety improvements to Masonic Avenue. From our partnership in the community-based “Fix Masonic” project to our work in getting a bicycle light at Masonic and Fell to our on-the-ground outreach, our staff and members have been fighting for Masonic improvements every step of the way.

Thanks to our members and community partners, the SFMTA unanimously approved a redesign of Masonic Avenue earlier this year, which includes pedestrian improvements, 100 new trees planted and San Francisco’s first raised bikeway. This complete streets boulevard will provide a safer route for all road users.

Learn more about what this funding means for Masonic and 2nd Street here.

Add Your Voices to Calls for a Safer Polk Street

The message from the members of the SFMTA's Policy and Governance Committee was unequivocally clear at their last meeting on Friday, June 21: the safety of people walking and biking on Polk Street is paramount. Director Cheryl Brinkman once again called for "transformative change", while Director Joël Ramos wanted to see further improvements proposed. Our members in attendance acknowledged the concerns of those opposed to the changes but made it clear the how important a safer Polk Street would be to them and thousands of San Franciscans biking this street. Send your own letter of support today.

Bidding Adieu and Gratitude to Jodie Medeiros

Our longtime and tremendously successful Development Director is moving on to an exciting new position as the Deputy Director of the SF Housing Action Coalition (HAC). After more than eight years at the helm of the SF Bicycle Coalition's fundraising efforts (and before that membership), Jodie Medeiros is leaving behind an impressive record, including helping grow the organization's budget form $430K to $1.6M and playing a big role in our tremendous membership growth over the years. After 8 years of boosting bicycling advocacy, Jodie is moving on to pursue her other passion of housing issues. She will wind down at SF Bicycle Coalition in mid-July, and we wish her the very best of everything and endless gratitude for her role in our growth and for bringing such passion and joy to her work. Thank you Jodie!

Now we need your help hiring a superstar Development Director to join our team.

Help us Make SOMA and Tenderloin Streets Safer

Many streets of San Francisco remain dangerous for people walking and biking. When the lack of adequate infrastructure in dense urban environments are mixed with high traffic speeds and volumes, the result is often high-injury corridors. Few parts of San Francisco compare in this regard to Western South of Market and the Tenderloin. We want to learn from our members who live and work in these Central City neighborhoods what changes they would like to see. Come to our Central City meeting next Monday, July 8 at 6PM at our office on 833 Market, 10th Floor. RSVP today by emailing Chema.

Monthly Safety Update: Lots of Free Classes

Our bicycle safety education program continues to roll forward full steam ahead. After educating nearly 4,000 people in 2012, we’re on track to beat that number this year -- with your help. We’ve got another 10 free classes scheduled for the coming months -- from our in-classroom safety workshops to our Adult Learn to Ride program. So, even if you think you’re an experienced urban bicyclist, we’ve got a class to help you hone your skills and stay safe on the road. Or, give the gift of bicycling to a friend, coworker, or neighbor. If someone has ever said “I wish I could ride a bike...” direct them to sfbike.org/education. Be sure to check out all of our upcoming classes and what we’re doing to teach people the rules of the road all year round: sfbike.org/education!

Video: Muni and Bikes

Muni and BikesThis year, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition teamed up with the SFMTA and
the Muni Training Department to create a video for Muni operators on how to safely share the streets with people on bikes. The 14-minute video will be shown to all new Muni operators. We know that educating frequent drivers -- like Muni operators and taxi drivers -- helps make our streets much safer. Take a look, and thanks for doing your part by riding predictably. Together, we can create safer streets!
