San Francisco’s First Neighborhood Greenway

Wiggle GreenwayOne week ago, the City launched the Wiggle Neighborhood Green Corridor, a project that will mark the arrival of neighborhood greenways to San Francisco. Neighborhood greenways aim to create a calmer experience and allow bicycle riders, pedestrians and even drivers to relax and slow down in residential neighborhoods. Neighborhood greenways focus more on sharing instead of separating and have been used with great success in cities like Portland, Seattle and Berkeley. If you were unable to attend the last week’s Open House, make sure your voice is heard by answering the project online questionnaire. Visit sfbike.org/wiggle for more information.

See You at Golden Wheel on Thursday!

21st Annual Golden Wheel AwardsDon’t miss the 21st Annual Golden Wheel Awards -- this Thursday! Online ticket sales end Wednesday at 5pm. Avoid the lines at the door, get your ticket now

In her six years as the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation, Janette Sadik-Khan has made a lot of changes. 300 miles of bike lanes, 6,000 shared bikes, 23 pedestrian plazas are just a few of the changes she’s made. Come hear her keynote to find out more, and how San Francisco can benefit from her wisdom!

We will be honoring two stellar community groups at this year’s awards. Our member-led, CC Puede: Cesar Chavez, Yes We Can and the Yerba Buena Community Benefit District. Come raise a glass with us to toast their accomplishments to our communities.

Support Masonic, Second and Mansell Street Funding

Fund Masonic Fixes NowOver the next week, the Transportation Authority will make the final decisions regarding funding for the Masonic Avenue Complete Streets project, Second Street Improvement Project and Mansell Corridor Improvements in McLaren Park. All three of these projects represent substantial safety improvements for all users of these corridors, whether they walk, bike or take transit. Help us make sure that these projects are fully funded by writing a support letter for any of them (or all three!) today. We are also looking for motivated speakers for the Transportation Authority hearing on June 25 at 11 am at City Hall. Contact chema@sfbike.org if you are interested in speaking up for better bikeways.

Congratulations Team Bike Challenge Winners!

Team Bike ChallengeIn a fierce competition to bike miles and earn points; Bike to Work Day’s 2013 Team Bike Challenge broke records as 7,249 Bay Area commuters rode over a million miles in May.

Congratulations to San Francisco’s winning team Partycar.com! They blew everyone away by bicycling 8,466 miles in May! Coming in second and third in San Francisco was Partycar Domestiques and Partycar Broom Wagon (wonder if there’s a connection). Partycar.com, also had the two highest mileage individuals on their team: Ramesh G rode 2,646.6 miles and Peter Chang, 2,394.0 miles.

Winning the San Francisco Company Bike Challenge was Golden Gate National Parks with 10,869 miles! Followed in second and third place by Exploratorium and REI SF!

Hearing on Delayed Better Market Street Project

Yesterday, the Land Use & Economic Development Commission heard from City staff on the long-delayed Better Market Street project, which is set to bring big changes to the city’s busiest street. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to re-envision and re-shape this important transit, biking, and walking corridor is still in flux, and years away from being complete. While we’re excited that parts of Market Street have just received a fresh coat of pavement and paint, it’s important to keep our eyes on the big picture and recognize that smooth pavement is not enough.

The Better Market Street Plan is now expected to break ground in 2017 and be complete in 2019. Simply, you -- and every San Franciscan -- cannot wait that long.  With another three years before any major changes, there is plenty of time to try out designs and pilot programs that will benefit biking and walking.  We had many members at the hearing yesterday calling for funding to ensure these pilots happen quickly to improve your ride and inform the long-term plan. An Incomplete Design for Oakdale Avenue

Also last week, the City’s Green Connections project team hosted a Community Open House in the Bayview to present a new streetscape designed to improve walking and biking on Oakdale Avenue, but only between Quint Street and Lane Street (roughly between City College Southeast Campus and the Joseph Lee Recreation Center). Beyond Quint Street though, there are no plans to make the street safer, in spite of Oakdale being scheduled for repaving all the way to Bayshore. We believe this is an excellent opportunity to make this street safer and are urging the City to add separated bikeways, reduce speeding and add urgently needed safety improvements from on Oakdale Avenue from Bayshore Boulevard to Keith Street. Visit sfbike.org/oakdale to see how you can help.

Welcome Mary Kay!

We’re thrilled to welcome Mary Kay Chin to the team as our new Valet Bike Parking Coordinator. A San Francisco native, Mary Kay steps into the role after having served as one of our outstanding Valet Supervisors for the past year. In addition to having been an SF Bicycle Coalition member for the past six years, Mary Kay has strong ties with the local bicycling community and many different biking groups. She is the co-founder of the SF Yellow Bike Project, a nonprofit, volunteer-powered community bike shop that transforms donations into rideable bikes for the Bay Area. She works on bikes so often, she says she has her own personal bike kitchen in her kitchen. We’re excited to benefit from her expertise and can-do attitude! Say hi at marykay@sfbike.org.
