Market, Fell, Oak and Polk: Members Taking Action

  • Market Street: Thanks to your outcry when the City announced that the Better Market Street Project had been even further delayed, the Board of Supervisors has continued to put pressure on the City to get moving with a package of immediate improvements to the street. We are working to shape this list of much-needed improvements and get it on the ground.

Tweet to your Supervisor to encourage them to keep their attention on immediate improvements to San Francisco’s main biking street: “Thanks for continuing to push for immediate improvements to Market Street! Please keep it up! @[your Supervisor’s handle] @sfbike”
  • Fell & Oak Streets: Separation is on the way. Thanks to members who continue to speak up at MTA Board meetings to urge the agency to get moving on adding temporary separation on this bikeway. And special thanks to Supervisor Breed for sending a letter to the SFMTA urging the immediate installation of soft-hit posts. Meanwhile, it may be hard to see, but the City has indeed begun work on the Oak Street bikeway between Scott and Baker. We’re keeping the pressure on until both bikeways are on the ground.
  • Polk Street: Thank you to the hundreds of people who have already sent in letters to the Mayor and SFMTA urging them to prioritize biking and walking safety on Polk Street. If you haven’t already sent in a letter, do it today!

SPECIAL ALERT: The City has announced the dates for two upcoming public meetings on the project. These events are not to be missed! Please let us know which meeting you plan to attend here.
    • WHERE: 1300 Polk St (at Bush) at the First Congregational Church Fellowship Hall
      WHEN:
Saturday, April 27 from 10am-1pm (open house) &
Tuesday, April 30 from 5pm-8:30pm (open house)

Is Your Company a Bike-Friendly Business?

If your answer is YES! Hooray! Take the next step in nominating your business to be awarded for the 2013 Bike Friendly Business Awards. This year’s awards will be given away on the steps of City Hall by Mayor Lee and the SF Bicycle Coalition on Thursday May 9th. What better way to showcase your company than being a 2013 Bike Friendly Business! Nominate your company here.

If you answered No, then let us help you get your place of work more bike-friendly. The SF Bicycle Coalition is the local leader in offering education, how-to workshops, biking tips and tricks, bike rides and happy hours and bike parking consultation to help whip businesses into bike-tastic shape! Request your toolkit here.

Either way, you can take the Team Bike Challenge! Gather your friends, colleagues and neighbors to form teams and pedal to win! It’s a fun and easy way to see just how much biking does for your health, budget and environment. Sign up now to be ready to compete during the month of May!

Join the New SF Bicycle Coalition Young Leaders Group

Deepen your involvement in San Francisco bicycle advocacy! The SF Bicycle Coalition is forming a new Young Leaders Group focused on connecting, engaging and developing members who are looking to be more involved. As a Young Leader, you will have the powerful opportunity to better apply your skills to improve the areas of bicycling that you care about most. Possible group projects include safety, education, social, events, and more!

If you are a current SF Bicycle Coalition member excited to commit to at least one-year of monthly meetings and to collaborate on at least two projects, you are encouraged to apply! This is an inclusive group open to all ages. Applications open until Friday, April 12. Visit sfbike.org/young_leaders for more info.

Climate Ride = The Perfect Bike Vacation

Planning your next vacation? How about a fully-supported bike tour through Northern California’s beautiful coast and ancient redwoods while blissfully sleeping under the stars at night? Another thing that will help you sleep at night: this ride raises thousands of dollars for organizations that focus on sustainability, environmental causes and bicycle advocacy, including your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. This year the 5-day Climate Ride from Fortuna to San Francisco comes early: May 19-23.

Spaces are going fast on the CA Climate Ride (less than 50 spots left!), but don’t fret. Registration is still wide open for the New York to DC ride this October. Sign up for either the west or east coast Climate Ride and choose the SF Bicycle Coalition as your beneficiary, and we’ll help you reach your training and fundraising goals.

All riders must raise at least $2,400, but don’t let that stop you. We’ll help you! Got a cool fundraiser? Let us advertise it for you! See what David Baker, SF Bicycle Coalition member and award winning architect, has set up to fundraise for his ride. Got questions about the ride? Contact Tracy@sfbike.org for more info.

Video: Streetfacts: Bike Lanes Aren’t Just for Big Cities

We’ve been talking a lot about how San Francisco’s bike network and improvements compare to other big cities. But what about smaller cities and towns? Bicycling is booming all across the country, and it’s exciting to see so many innovative bike improvements in places like Missoula, Flagstaff, Austin and Memphis. Check out this great new short video by Streetfilms about bike improvements in our country’s smaller cities.
