Fell and Oak Approved - Thanks to You!

Did you hear? Last week, the SFMTA Board of Directors approved a slew of bike and pedestrian safety improvements for Fell and Oak Streets! This unanimous decision followed years of advocacy from the SF Bicycle Coalition and a long history of grassroots advocacy from you, our dearest members.

We can't thank you enough for speaking up at the hearing, attending countless community meetings, and ensuring that the City prioritizes safety for people walking and biking on this critical connection.

We are thrilled that separated bikeways, sidewalk bulbouts and other traffic-calming measures on Fell and Oak will begin to roll out in just a matter of weeks. Click here to see photos and read more about this historic decision.

Improving Polk Street Starts with You

The approved plan for Fell and Oak Streets started with members and neighbors like you coming together to identify ways to improve bike and pedestrian safety. You have the same opportunity to improve Polk Street between McAllister and Union Street in the coming years. If you live, work, travel or hang out near Polk Street, get involved in some of the upcoming SFMTA Community events:

  • Walking Tours – Wednesday, October 24; Thursday, October 25; and Saturday, October 27
  • Polk Street Design Charette - Saturday, October 27, 10am - 2pm, 1300 Polk Street at Bush.

See sfbike.org/polk more details on the events and other ways that you can get involved in this important campaign.

Look Up: Bike Billboards Around Town

Last week was an exciting week! Not only did bikeways on Fell and Oak Streets get unanimous approval, but our new Bike SF Billboards went up around town! Four billboards featuring real San Francisco bike riders (and SF Bicycle Coalition members like you) are now up around town. The campaign is aimed at encouraging more people to discover the joys of biking in SF and to showcase real people who bike in our fine city. Huge thanks to the folks at Total Outdoor for donating the printing and billboard space, the amazing Orange Photography team for taking the photos, and Chuey, Jean, Dave, and Jessica for being our featured riders! Keep your eyes peeled for the billboards. And check out the corresponding info on how to "Get Rolling" in SF, full of great tips for new and seasoned riders.

Bike the Vote: Election Day is November 6

It's time to Bike the Vote! This November, six seats on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and two BART Board of Directors positions are up for a vote. This election is an opportunity to ensure that we keep San Francisco rolling on its way to becoming a better, more bike-friendly city. The SF Bicycle Coalition has endorsed the following candidates and measures for the November 6, 2012 races:

  • District 1: Eric Mar
  • District 3: David Chiu
  • District 5 (ranked): #1 Christina Olague, #2 Julian Davis
  • District 7: Norman Yee
  • District 9: David Campos
  • District 11: John Avalos
  • BART Board of Directors District 9: Tom Radulovich
  • YES on Proposition B: Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond

Are you as excited as we are? Make sure you are ready to help Bike the Vote. Together we'll keep City Hall and BART leading the way for more and better bike lanes for you! Find out more about the candidates at sfbike.org/vote.

Submit artwork at sfbike.org/wf_art_12 by November 1st to be considered for the show.

Thank You for a Wonderful Season of Sunday Streets

This Sunday in the Excelsior marked the finale of another great season of Sunday Streets. The SF Bicycle Coalition was proud to partner with Livable City for Sunday Streets by recruiting and training hundreds of volunteers to open over 20 miles of streets on 10 Sundays, in seven neighborhoods around the city! And we helped dozens of youngsters learn how to ride without training wheels through our Freedom from Training Wheels program.

A huge shout out to all the volunteers who monitored intersections, provided local access, set up equipment and made sure everyone had a great time! A special thank you to our Sunday Streets interns, Trafton Bean, Will Heywood, D Jan Visaya, and Kristal Brown, for their excellent leadership and hard work running the Sunday Streets Volunteer Program. We couldn't have done it without you.

We are working closely with Livable City, the SFMTA, and other stakeholders to ensure that Sunday Streets 2013 builds on this year's success towards our goal of a citywide network of weekly Sunday Streets. Stay tuned for next year's schedule.

Video: My NYC Biking Story: Kevin Bolger, a.k.a. Squid

San Francisco Bicycle Coalition's Executive Director, Leah Shahum, just got back from a trip to New York City, where she talked about the changes to SF streets and explored some of the new developments in our fellow Green Lane city of New York. Here's a great video that shows some of those changes, as told through Squid, a New York City bike messenger for 20 years, who now bikes in the city with his young child.
