Fifth CicLAvia Brings Out the Bicyclists and Pedestrians

Thank you to all the organizers, volunteers, sponsors, partners, and supporters of the 5th CicLAvia! Since the inaugural block party in October 2010, CicLAvia has modified the route a few times and presented CicLAvistas with new opportunities and places to explore.

This past CicLAvia saw hundreds of thousands of people come out and celebrate Los Angeles. It included the newly opened section of Grand Park, the Los Angeles parade of WalkLAvia, an extended spur Boyle Heights, spurs to Chinatown and Exposition Park, and more.

L
ACBC was proud to once again partner with CicLAvia and coordinate the volunteer efforts. Check out our Facebook album of several of the CicLAvia and LACBC volunteers who helped make this past CicLAvia a great success!

Farewell Sgt. Krumer, Hello Four New LAPD Liaisons

For several years, Sgt. David Krumer has been the bicycling community's main point of contact with the Los Angeles Police Department. Many can attest that he was always consistent and quick to respond to all manner of issues that arose. LACBC was not alone in relying on him for assistance. Sgt. Krumer has been reassigned and we'd like to thank him for all that he's done for bicyclists in Los Angeles. Sgt. Krumer, we wish you the best.Come ride with us any time!

With Sgt. Krumer's departure as the LAPD go-to guy for all things bike, the department recently announced four new liaisons to take Krumer's place. Each liaison will represent one of four traffic divisions in the City of Los Angeles. Their role is to be available to bicycling public. If, for example, you've had an altercation with a motorist or if you have an issue with an LAPD officer that you've encountered, the liaisons are there for you. You can contact them according to the traffic division you were in at the time of your incident. For a more detailed description of the change at LAPD, you can read blogger and LACBC Board member Ted Rogers' post on Los Angeles Streetsblog. A map of the divisions is on the LACBC blog. Starting now, keep this list handy!

What's Ringing Our Bike Bells: Instead Of Surgery, Man Pedals Off The Pounds

Several Americans try to lose weight through a variety of methods. Ernest Gagnon of Billerica, Massachusetts, once weighed 570 pounds and opted to lose weight by giving cyclocross--a type of intense cycle racing on obstacle courses--a try.

He started slowly, and it wasn't always easy. Says Ernest: "You know, I'm riding in spandex in Boston with these guys. Never thought I could do that [and] it's liberating in a way. It really [forces] you to be honest with yourself, accept who you are; because if you can't accept who you are, you can't do anything."

Two years later, Ernest has lost 240 pounds and is still enjoying the sport of cyclocross and being much healthier. You can read more about him on NPR.

You can learn more about cyclocross in Southern California at SoCalCross.org. You can also check out some cyclocross this month at the LA Bike Fest on October 20-21 at the Pomona Fairgrounds.
