Big changes are in the works for Polk Street and we need you to come to a community meeting tomorrow night (Wednesday, September 26) at the First Congregational Church (1300 Polk at Bush) to speak up for what you want improved. Through our Connecting the City campaign, the SF Bicycle Coalition has ensured that the city will be repaving Polk Street and improving bike and pedestrian safety. If you bike, walk, work, or live near here, we strongly encourage you to come to the community meeting tomorrow and join your neighbors to help redesign Polk Street. See sfbike.org/polk for more details and hope to see you tomorrow. Dramatic Changes to Masonic Avenue! After years of community outreach, organizing and planning, the Boulevard Proposal for Masonic Avenue was approved by a unanimous vote at the September 18 SFMTA Board of Directors Hearing! This is a huge victory for safer streets we should all be proud of. This approval means Masonic Avenue will be getting a raised, separated bikeway, big pedestrian improvements and one hundred new trees. What an incredible transformation this street will undergo! Thank you to the North of Panhandle Neighborhood Association, FixMasonic, Walk SF, University Terrace Neighborhood Association and all the neighbors and SF Bicycle Coalition members who showed their support for improvements to Masonic Avenue between Fell Street and Geary Street. Special thanks go out to Supervisors Olague and Mar for their ongoing commitment and support of this project. Improving Masonic Avenue has been a huge priority of the SF Bicycle Coalition, and we're thrilled that over 5 years of dedicated advocacy has brought us a to where we are today. Pedal on out to Golden Gate Park (14th Avenue East picnic area) for a free and full day of family biking fun. Our Family Day celebration is a fun way to start or expand your family biking routine and get to know other bike-loving families. This year, we've got more events than ever before—including a bike road-eo, scavenger hunt, bike parade, bike repair workshops, Freedom From Training Wheels classes and countless other games and activities. Special thanks to over 200 wonderful member-volunteers, the generous New Belgium team, and the 6,000+ fans who joined us in the park to celebrate bikes. You helped raised over $27,000 for the advocacy work of the SF Bicycle Coalition and the Bay Area Ridge Council, wow! Check out photos on our flickr! Ellen Cohan won the Car-for-Bike Swap! Ellen pledged to live car-free for a year and traded in her Honda for $2,250 to create the bike of her dreams! Check out her great video and look for her riding around the city soon! City Issues 5-Year State of Cycling Report Last week, the City of San Francisco released its 2012 State of Cycling Report. The report, published every five years, tracks data regarding the number of people bicycling, as well as issues findings on public opinions about bicycling. The report shows significant growth in the number of people bicycling for transportation; strong public support for adding greater bicycling infrastructure, with a preference for physically separated bikeways; and the potential to invite more people to bike through more separated bikeways and education programs. But it also reveals how far San Francisco has to go to be a truly safe and comfortable city for bicycling. While the overall percentage of people biking is higher than most cities (3.5%), San Francisco is still miles away from its official City goal of 20% of trips by 2020. When compared with other cities, the State of Cycling Report shows that San Francisco is falling behind other cities in commitment to better biking. Read more about key findings of the report here. Lots of Fun Volunteer Opportunities As an organization, we have lots to be proud of lately! From over 22 miles of new bike lanes to fresh pavement all over town. Now, we have tons of opportunities for you to share with others why you bike in San Francisco and what you think about the improved biking conditions -- like smooth pavement on Market Street, more bike racks being installed, and new buffered bikeways like on sections of 17th Street. Sharing your story to other bike riders is a powerful tool to encourage others to join the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. October's Service Stations: Once a week on Tuesdays during the month of October. A healthy mix of mornings and evening outreach, choose the one that fits your schedule and your commute! Celebrate Architecture in the City This Thursday As the American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Francisco chapter puts it: Good design can solve everyday problems. Join the closing party of the month-long Architecture in the City festival this Thursday to see solutions to design challenges posed by urban leaders in San Francisco, including the SF Bicycle Coalition. The SF Bicycle Coalition is grateful to local design firm Bionic for tackling a particular challenge: How can we mediate the public realm for pedestrians, bikes and cars on San Francisco Streets. Video: Tour de Fat SF Car for Bike Trade Entry!!!! One of the highlights of Saturday's record-breaking San Francisco Tour de Fat was the car for bike trade portion of the show! Every year, New Belgium offers a sweet competition: trade your car in and they'll give you a really great bike. This year it was an even sweeter deal--with the winner receiving $2250 to use to create their dream bike. The applications poured in, and one lucky winner was chosen.
