Dear Kevin,
"Time flies" may be a hackneyed expression, but it's never been more true than since we opened the gallery a little more than three years ago. Maybe that's because the passing of exhibits so vividly marks the passing of time. With that in mind, and because we know time has a way of passing quickly for all of us, we're writing to remind you that our current exhibit of Peter Steinhauer's Cocoons ends on Saturday, March 31. And to add a little excitement to this reminder, we just heard from Peter that he's a finalist in the PDN (Photo District News) Annual Competition and that six of his Cocoons images will be published in the June issue! Corden|Potts Gallery is located at 49 Geary Street, Suite 410, in San Francisco. The gallery is open 11 am to 5:30 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays, and until 7:30 pm on the first Thursday of each month On his first visit to Hong Kong in January 1994, Peter was surprised when he noticed his first cocooned buildings. At first he thought that the artist Christo and his wife-collaborator Jeanne-Claude had a new project wrapping buildings there. But he soon realized that what he was seeing were examples of Hong Kong's traditional building technique of utilizing bamboo scaffolding and covering buildings undergoing construction with brightly colored fabric. Once a practice seen all over Asia, Hong Kong is the final bastion of the bamboo scaffolders. And though it is a traditional building method, modern buildings have taken it to heights never imagined in an earlier age. Peter, an American, has lived in southeast Asia since the 1990s. He is best known as a black-and-white photographer whose images of Vietnam, Bali, Burma, India, China and Hong Kong, have won him critical acclaim and many solo exhibits around the world. However, Cocoons presents his first major body of work in color; a fitting response to the vibrant fabric wrapping the cocooned buildings. In addition to exhibiting his work at galleries and museums in Asia, Europe and the US, Peter has published two books of his Vietnam photographs. His second Vietnam book, Enduring Spirit of Vietnam, was named Best Photography Book of 2007 by PDN and won a Silver Medal in the Independent Publishers Annual Book Awards, 2007. We hope you won't miss this opportunity to see Peter's Cocoons and that we'll see you in the gallery soon. Liz and Jan
