| | Dear Kevin, As you may know, your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has been working hard to get separated bikeways on three critical and intimidating blocks of Fell and Oak streets. But this project is in jeopardy because a very vocal minority is speaking out again the bikeways, prioritizing their parking convenience over your safety. Here’s what one of the neighbors said about the Fell and Oak bikeway projects: "I oppose the [Fell and Oak Streets] bike plan which would eliminate 70 parking spots in our neighborhood. Although I have garage space it would be a great hardship for my visitors, friends and neighbors. I think the current Fell St bike lane is perfectly fine." Perfectly fine? We don’t think so. | These few vocal opponents are starting to get the attention of the politicians and city agencies, endangering years of our community organizing work. In the last year, your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has reached out to every business along the corridor, distributed thousands of fliers to neighbors and businesses, and attended a dozen community meetings — all to be your voice for safe bicycling conditions. That’s a lot of our staffing, time and energy for this one Connecting the City project. And your safety is well worth it! | Fell and Oak street bikeways are only three blocks. If the City bends its ear to these vocal pro-parking minorities then other key bicycle safety improvements are also in danger. A special gift right now will ensure that years of San Francisco Bicycle Coalition advocacy are not undone by neighbors who think that conditions are “perfectly fine.” They’re not. And you deserve better. | With gratitude, Leah Shahum Executive Director | | | | | | 833 Market St., 10th Floor | San Francisco, CA 94103 US | | | |
