Thank You for Making Our Biking & Eating Dreams Come True at Tour de Taste

Thanks to all the participants, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who have made our biking and eating dreams come true at the first-ever Tour de Taste! Participants enjoyed a pre-ride stretch, a short ride along Ballona Creek, food from local restaurants and beyond, and the music of The Anti-Job.

Check out some of our event photos on our Facebook page.

Culver City Crossroads even wrote a recap of the event.

We'll see you all next year!
Cyclists Demand Safer Streets at LA Police Commission Meeting
Photo: Mikey Wally

On Tuesday of this week, LACBC staff member Bobby Gadda and board member Ted Rogers represented LACBC in front of the L.A. Police Commission, joining a group of
cyclists demanding safer streets for L.A. bike riders and pedestrians.
Led by Northridge West Neighborhood Councilmember Don Ward, a.k.a. Roadblock of the Midnight Ridazz, the group asked the Commission to devote greater attention and police resources to investigating hit-and-run collisions involving people on bikes and on foot. They also asked the LAPD to stop supporting increased speed limits under the state's 85 percentile rule, which requires cities and counties to raise speed limits to what are often dangerously high levels in order to continue using RADAR for speed enforcement.

The Commission members were very receptive to the requests, and representatives of LAPD Chief Beck followed up by requesting more information. In particular, they are looking for specific examples of cyclists who were victims of hit-and-run, who feel their case wasn't taken seriously or investigated in a timely manner.

Share your story. If you were involved in an incident like that, please email us at carol@la-bike.org with the date, time and location of the incident, as well as any case number and the names of officers involved, if possible, and we'll forward your story to the appropriate people.
Welcome to the LACBC Staff, Mark DiDia!

Welcome to our newest staff member, Mark DiDia! This month, Mark begins his position as the Burbank Youth Project Organizer. As part of the Burbank Kids ReCycle Project, he'll be teaching Burbank youth to fix up their bikes as an employee of LACBC. A volunteer for CicLAvia and Bici Libre/Bici Digna, he's been ingrained in the bike community for a while, and we're glad to have heading up this innovative project in Burbank.

Help Make CicLAvia Possible: Volunteer

We are gearing up for the next CicLAvia on April 15, 2012, and LACBC is assisting with the volunteer coordination this year.

Right now we need volunteers to help with the initial canvassing of the route from March 9-13. We'll be passing out doorhangers to all the residents, businesses, etc. along the route--inviting folks to come out and encouraging businesses to participate in the festivities.

Check out the schedule at ciclavia.org/volunteer and email Martin Lopez-Iu at ciclaviavolunteer@gmail.com to volunteer!

Bike Infrastructure & Policy Updates from Around the County

Arcadia: On Tuesday night, the Arcadia City Council voted to oppose the creation a city bike plan. Mayor Pro Tem Robert C. Harbicht took the lead to nix a contract with a bike plan consultant to prepare a bike plan for the city. Unfortunately, the rest of the council, including the Mayor (who established the city's "mayor's bike ride") followed. Harbict stated he had concerns about federal funding for bike access in general as he didn't believe cycling could be a legitimate form of alternate transportation. Ironically, both Harbicht and the Mayor claim to be avid cyclists. If you live in Arcadia, we encourage you to contact the mayor and your councilmembers now and tell them how disappointed you are. - Vincent Chang, BikeSGV

Westside: The Westside Cities Council of Governments (WSCCOG)  has been working on a WSCCOG regional bicycle safety and awareness plan since last year.  An important element of the plan are recommendations to connect the Westside Cities through implementing bicycle infrastructure projects.  The recommended projects or "gap closures" will create a basic regional bicycle infrastructure network to provide north/south and east/west connections. Individual cities within the WSCCOG will then be encouraged to implement projects these projects and close gaps in their route systems.

The following priority gap closures were presented to the WSCCOG Board on January 19, 2012

  • Santa Monica Blvd./Broadway (from La Brea Blvd. to Ocean Ave.)
  • San Vicente Blvd. (from Sunset Blvd. to La Brea Blvd.)
  • Barrington Ave./McLaughlin Ave./Slauson Ave. (from Sunset Blvd. to the Ballona Creek Bike Path)
  • Beverly Dr./Beverwil Dr./Duquesne Ave./Jefferson Blvd./Overland Ave.(from San Vicente to Westfield/Culver City Transit Center)
  • Expo Light Rail Bike Path/Bikeway (from La Brea Blvd. to the western terminus of Phase 2)

To view a map of the proposed  routes click hereWSCCOG is accepting comments now through March 4, 2012. The results of the comment period will be brought to the Board at its March 15, 2012 meeting in Culver City. Email your comments to the WSCCOG at Bikeinput.wsccog@gmail.com.
