Local Geographers Compile List of Favorite Places in New York

There's nothing quite like asking New York residents to weigh in on the must-see sites the city has to offer. Organizing such a list, however, can be a daunting task. In order to make sense of it all, we asked the Local Arrangements Committee to compile a short list of favorite places to visit in The Big Apple. Learn more.

Here's a small sample of favorite places:
  • Rockefeller Center. 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Take a quick ice-skating break or check out the view from the observation deck at the Top of the Rock. www.rockefellercenter.com.
  • Yonah Schimmel's Knishes Bakery. 137 East Houston Street. http://knishery.com.
  • Red Hook, Brooklyn. A bit of a walk from the subway but worth it. Take the F Train to 4th Avenue and walk over to the river. Stunning views of the Statue of Liberty. See the Waterfront Museum. Think quirky, surprising, and fun for kids. www.waterfrontmuseum.org/home.

Layered SPURA: Spurring Conversations through Visual Urbanism

Join Gabrielle Bendiner-Viani, a New School Urban Studies faculty member and co-founder of the interdisciplinary practice on place + dialogue, Buscada, for a tour and gallery talk at the Layered SPURA exhibit. The exhibition, a culmination of four years of student, faculty, and community collaboration, emerges from Bendiner-Viani's City Studio, a part of the New School's Urban Programs, and explores the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area (SPURA), a complex site of failed urban renewal and community concern on New York's Lower East Side. Learn more.
