Announcing Our 2014 Endorsements

Bike the VoteThis year’s election is crucial to deciding the future of San Francisco streets. Last month, we shared our transportation bond measure endorsement (YES on A, YES on B, NO on L!). Today, we’re proud to share our endorsements for Supervisors and BART Board for the 2014 election:

  • Supervisor District 4: Katy Tang
  • Supervisor District 6: Jane Kim
  • Supervisor District 8: Scott Wiener
  • Supervisor District 10: Malia Cohen
  • BART Board District 8: Nick Josefowitz

Find out why we endorsed these candidates, and how you can help ensure the Republican-led Prop L loses at the polls.

Three Feet for Safety Law Goes Into Effect Today

3 foot law

California’s long-awaited “Three Feet for Safety” law finally goes into effect today. The law, championed by the California Bicycle Coalition, our advocates at the state level, is another step toward ensuring that people in our state are safe and comfortable when biking.

The law requires drivers to give at least three feet of clearance when passing someone on bike. If the street width doesn’t allow for that (as is often the case in San Francisco), the driver is required to slow down and only pass once it is safe to do so.

Read more about the law, how we're spreading the word and what it means on SF streets.

A Record-Breaking Tour de Fat!

30,000 Tour de FatThanks to the thousands of people who joined us at Tour de Fat on Saturday! This year’s  bike and beer ballyhoo broke all records! Beyond being a rockin’ good time, the event raised more than $30,000 for the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and Bay Area Ridge Trail!

Proceeds from Tour de Fat will help our organization to pedal strong this fall, ensuring we have the on-the-ground power to Bike the Vote (yes on A, Yes on B, No on L) and to move forward on key campaigns like Howard Street and the Embarcadero. Huge thanks to the 170 members who joined or renewed! Lots of love for the 150+ volunteers. And three cheers for New Belgium for putting the FUN back in fundraiser!

See more details and photos here.

Join Us for Women + Bike Night

The number of women bicycling in San Francisco is on the rise, but women still make up less than one third of the number of people biking on our streets. Are you one of the women on the road? Do you want to be? Join us for an evening of short films, snacks and discussion about how to get more women rolling!

Women + Bikes Night

The SF Bicycle Coalition is planning a Women + Bikes program and wants to hear your ideas. Join us to get the conversation started! RSVP Online.

The Embarcadero Goes Green-er

Embarcadero Green LanesThanks to funding from the Port of San Francisco, two more blocks of The Embarcadero received the greening treatment last week. From Harrison to Howard street heading southbound, the bike lane will be much more visible and will comfortably guide you along the waterfront.

But that’s not all; even more improvements are coming on the northern end. Huge thanks to the Port and the SF Municipal Transportation Agency for getting these projects in the ground! Read more about it here, and check out the photos.

Caltrain Got New Cars: Let’s Make 'Em Bike Cars!

More rail cars are coming to Caltrain because the Caltrain Board of Directors approved a purchase of 16 used rail cars from Metrolink. With a 364% growth in bike ridership and 13% of all Caltrain riders bringing their bikes, many people are denied boarding every day due to lack of capacity. With your help and support, we are urging Caltrain to retrofit their new purchases into bike cars to solve this problem. TAKE ACTION TODAY!
