Dear Kevin,
Your SF Bicycle Coalition membership is current through 12/14/2014. Thank you for being a member!

THIS WEEK:

Three Market Street Improvements Coming Soon!

Market StreetAs someone who bikes on Market Street, you know our city’s main boulevard is far from a perfect commute for the tens of thousands who use it daily.

As your SF Bicycle Coalition works on the bigger vision of a truly better Market Street — which includes protected bikeways from Van Ness to the waterfront — we’re also focusing on smaller improvements to improve your ride now.

We’re excited to report that our advocacy has resulted in some new improvements to Market Street! In the next few months, you’ll be riding on smoother pavement in Upper Market and have less private autos turning onto the mid-Market Stretch. Plus, you’ll have a chance to prototype projects to improve Market Street. Read more about the near-term improvements here.

Better Streets for People, Not Parking

Sidewalk ClosedThe progress we’re making to transform San Francisco into a better place to live, work and bike is being threatened by an initiative on this November’s ballot.

The so-called “Restore Transportation Balance” initiative seeks to do just the opposite of its misleading name. It will severely limit new bikeways, wider sidewalks and dedicated transit lanes in favor of adding more fast-moving traffic lanes, new parking garages and more, free on-street parking. We can’t let a small group lead us down a path of more congestion and gridlock and fewer transportation choices.

The SF Bicycle Coalition Education Fund will be working hard to educate voters about the benefits of better streets for all road users and the true costs of free parking. We can’t do it without your help, though. Please make a gift today, and help us lead the fight for better transit, walking and biking. Your contribution to the SF Bicycle Coalition Education fund is tax-deductible.

More Seniors are Biking in SF and Around the Country

More Seniors BikingIn San Francisco, the number of people biking has increased by 96% since 2006, and communities across the country are seeing similar increases. Nationwide, the number of people using a bike as their primary way to get to work has increased by 60% in the last ten years.

So, who is riding more? Well, just about everyone. Ridership in every age group has dramatically increased between 1995 and 2009, according to the latest US Census data. But it’s the older age groups that saw the biggest jump in ridership. Over one-third of the increase in bicycling nationwide came from people between the ages of 60 and 79!

Learn more about our efforts to welcome even more San Francisco elders to biking.

VIDEO: Why Do We Need a Buffer in Protected Bike Lanes? Well, Here’s Why...

BuffersRecently we shared tips on how to avoid the door zone. While knowing ways to help avoid a dooring is important, designing our streets to eliminate unsafe interactions is even more important. Check out this quick Streetfilm that shows why adding a buffer to protected bikeways makes it safer and more comfortable for everyone.

The Joint Powers Board, also known as Caltrain’s Board of Directors, will be holding their regular monthly meeting. The 9-person JPB consists of three officials representing each of the three counties: San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara. There has been an ongoing issue of bumps, which is when a passenger is denied boarding due to insufficient onboard bicycle capacity. There are two opportunities to address this issue: a near-term purchase of 11 Bombardier cars and the long-term plan of Caltrain modernization. This is your opportunity to speak up and let the Board know directly the urgent need to increase onboard bicycle capacity.

Read the agenda here.
