Dear Kevin, Coming to the Mission: SF’s First Raised BikewaySan Francisco is set to get its first raised bikeway next year! The showcase bikeway is part of the Mission/Valencia gateway project and will stretch southbound on Valencia Street from César Chávez Street to Duncan Street. This one-block bikeway heralds a completely new type of bicycle infrastructure to our city, one that will become more common in the next few years as Masonic Avenue and 2nd Street projects go in the ground. Learn more about the design and project here. Members, It's Time to Bike the Vote!Whether you ride the along the Marina during the weekend (District 2), bike to Ocean Beach through Golden Gate Park (District 4), work in SoMa (District 6), enjoy a meal on Valencia Street (District 8) or relax in the many parks along the Eastern waterfront (District 10), this election will be an important one. What are the candidates’ priorities around street safety for the next four years? Read what they have to say about biking and help us select our official candidate slate for this November. You have until September 2 to vote, so VOTE ON OUR ENDORSEMENTS TODAY! You can also volunteer as a bicycle ambassador leading up to the elections! Bumped on Caltrain? Here’s What We're Doing Every day, thousands of people board Caltrain with their bikes, helping them get safely and conveniently to and from home, their workplace, their school, their grocery store or their child’s daycare. That number has grown exponentially over the last ten years, with a 364% growth in bike ridership, which outpaces even the overall growth in Caltrain ridership. We submitted a formal comment to Caltrain (pdf) as they finalize their Strategic Plan, a document to guide their agency over the next ten years. The bottom line: Increase bicycle capacity on Caltrain! Learn more here, and submit your own comment today. Together we’ve made tremendous progress over the past 12 months, winning better bikeways on Folsom Street, Lower Polk Street, San Jose Avenue and most recently, Ortega Avenue. But not everyone is happy with our progress. In fact, the resistance to bike-friendly changes is growing so strong that we are seeing signs of a potential “bikelash” this fall. We can prevent a bikelash if we prove that our efforts are making San Francisco a better place to live, work and bike. But we need your help in order to be out in force this fall educating San Franciscans about the benefits of more people biking and of safer streets. Please make a gift today to the SF Bicycle Coalition Education Fund, and join a grassroots movement of supporters who want San Francisco to stand by its Transit First commitment and ensure that our streets are safer for everyone. If you make a gift today, a generous member will match your contribution dollar-for-dollar — up to $5,000.
