Bike-Friendly Santa Paula Gets Undeserved Rap Nearly two weeks ago, video surfaced of a woman making critical commentary on bicyclists while riding as a passenger in her car near her Calabasas neighborhood. It's not the first time a self-made video joking about running over bicyclists has appeared on the internet--and likely won't be the last--but when she was identified as a reserve officer for the Santa Paula Police Department, the video took on a life of its own. Last Friday, representatives from LACBC, our Santa Clarita Valley chapter, Yield to Life, and local bike lawyer and LACBC member Seth Davidson met with Santa Paula Chief Steve McLean to try to make lemonade out of a terrible situation. We discovered a small town that's turning itself around through hard work by a dedicated police force and leadership from an honest and hardworking chief. There is no history of the police department harboring ill will toward bicyclists. In fact, the police department hasn't issued a single citation for a bicyclist in the last year. Santa Paula is also rapidly expanding its bike network with a new 3-mile trail along the Santa Clara River and bike lanes in design. This is a town that embraces the many bicyclists that pass through each weekend and looks forward to the return of the Amgen Tour of California. Many words were written about the awful video that we don't need to repeat here. Chief McLean took the video seriously and accepted the reserve officer's resignation within 48 hours. He requested supplemental training for his officers from LACBC to further improve their awareness of bike safety issues. We have also agreed to work together on education efforts as opportunities arise. We consider the Santa Paula Police Department a partner and look forward to a fruitful relationship. Special thanks to Seth Davidson for his exceptional advocacy work. |
