Ballot Initiative Seeks to Throw SF's Transportation Policy in Reverse

Market StreetDo you think people biking, walking and taking transit receive too much safe space and funding already? There's a group who does! And they're so adament about undoing years of transit-first planning and safe streets action that they've placed a measure on this November's ballot.

The so-called "Restore Transportaion Balance" initiative is designed to roll back the City’s transit-first policy, creating more dangerous and congested streets with fewer transportation options for all of us. Despite decades of cars-first policies, (including the recent roll back on Sunday meters) this group wants the City to give more space to cars and less to people. In short, they want to put parking above people.

Though misguided at every level, this "transit-last" ballot measure is alarmingly well-funded, with billionarire Sean Parker and other Republican elites bankrolling the initiative. From now until election season, your SF Bicycle Coalition will be working with partners to ensure our City keeps rolling forward in smart, safe and sustainable transportation options for all.

Read more about this ballot iniative, the ballots we do support and how you can help ensure that our transit-first policy doesn't come to a screeching stop.

Embarcadero Bikeway Off to a Great Start

The Embarcadero Enhancement Project kicked off last week with an open house, which gave the public a chance to learn more and ask questions. The open house was well-attended and so far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Dozens of media outlets reported about the project, including a front-page Chronicle piece. One thing is clear: San Franciscans are excited to make the waterfront a more people-friendly place. The City will return later this year with a series of workshops to begin developing design alternatives with your help. This is an incredible opportunity to showcase what our city can achieve in providing world-class biking and walking along our waterfront, and we will continue working towards that vision. In the meantime, please take a moment to complete our survey. Already finished it? Share it with your friends, your bike buddies and anyone you know who loves our waterfront.

Safety Tip: How to Avoid Dooring

Avoid the Door ZoneAs we connect the city with more protected bikeways, biking in San Francisco continues to become even more safe and comfortable for people of all ages. Unfortunately, many bike routes in San Francisco still don’t have protected bikeways, so people driving and biking need to be extra careful to avoid dangerous interactions — like unsafe turning or the door zone (two of the top causes of injury to people biking). From staying out of the door zone to how to avoid dooring as the driver, here’s what you need to know about how to avoid dooring. Plus, what to do if you are doored, and how to help ensure the driver is cited.

Family Biking Tip: Bike to Day Camp!

It’s great to see so many children biking with their families this summer. With skill a nd confidence gained with the extra summer practice, why not try the commute to summer school or day camp for an on-road bike ride together? Parent tips: test the route on your own first to find the easiest, safest way to camp. Kids ride more slowly, so you may want to bike it once with your child on the weekend, before setting off for camp on a weekday morning. Don’t forget your lock! For more teaching tips and more family biking information, download the Family Biking Guide. Hope to see you in the lanes!

You’re Never Too Old to Learn to Ride a Bike

Learn to Bike Like ChristopherOne of the programs the SF Bicycle Coalition is most proud of is our extensive education work. Every year, our program teaches thousands of adults and youth throughout the city how to bike comfortably and by the Rules of the Road.

This week, we took the chance to check in with Christopher Abreu, a recent transplant to San Francisco and new member of the SF Bicycle Coalition. Christopher recently learned to bike in our free Urban Bicycling Workshop series. Hear what he has to say about his experience and why he decided to support our work. Read more.

VIDEO: San Francisco: Removal of the Embarcadero Freeway

StreetFilmsWe’re thrilled to see the Embarcadero project finally moving forward. With the first open house completed last week and the planning process underway, we thought we’d take this time to look back at the history of the Embarcadero. Check out this great Streetfilms about the removal of the freeway and start to a more people-friendly Embarcadero. You might recognize some of the long-time bike and livable streets advocates who are interviewed.
