Dear Kevin, THIS WEEK:
Sunday Streets is in the Richmond this weekend! Golden Wheel Awards Just One Week Away! The 22nd Annual Golden Wheel Awards are just one week away! On Tuesday, July 15, San Francisco’s annual premier bicycle advocacy event returns to honor those who are helping make our city a better place to live, work and bike. Join us as we hear Streetsblog founder, Aaron Naparstek, share his perspective on shifting the narrative about bicycles. This year we’re honoring two fantastic community members: Dr. Shirley Johnson and Officer Matt Friedman. Dr. Shirley Johnson is a longtime SF Bicycle Coalition member and supporter who spearheaded the Bikes ONboard campaign, which led to expanded access and capacity for bikes on Caltrain and the end of the BART bike blackout. Officer Matt Friedman started the @SFPDbiketheft Twitter account, bringing a new approach to combating bike theft in San Francisco. Ocean Avenue Corridor Meeting on July 9 The City has been hosting a series of community workshops to brainstorm potential improvements to the Ocean Avenue corridor, a popular and vibrant hub of commercial activity. As part of these near-term improvements, we have been supporting green-backed sharrows for Ocean Avenue as reminder that this is a key piece of Connecting the City and our citywide bicycle network. On Juy 9, they will be presenting what has come out of the community feedback. Learn more about this project and the different ways you can get involved here. Best Car-Free Spots for Family Biking Want to hone your biking skills or practice pedaling with your kids before riding on the streets? There are a lot of great car-free spaces to bike in San Francisco, and we are hoping to build more. Naturally, Sunday Streets (this weekend in the Richmond) is our favorite. Check out the full list of car-free picks here, and note that as an extension of our continuous work to connect San Francisco neighborhoods with more protected bikeways, we also offer a free urban bicycling class to help you gain confidence riding in the city. Streetsblog Editor-in-Chief Aaron Naparstek has been deeply involved with the Livable Streets movement for many years. In this StreetsFilm from 2009, he caught up with Congressman Earl Blumenaur about the 2009 federal stimulus bill and how advocates could better engage their leaders. Check out this quick film about transit, stimulus bikes and the Obama administration. And of course, get your ticket to Golden Wheel to hear Aaron Naparstek in person.
