THIS WEEK:

Biggest and Best Bike to Work Day Ever!

Bike to Work Day 2014This year was the 20th Anniversary of Bike to Work Day and San Francisco celebrated it in style! Enormous thanks to the 200 Bicycle Ambassadors, bag stuffers, equipment schleppers and behind-the-scenes helpers who made this year’s Bike to Work Day the biggest and best yet! Here are just a few of the highlights from the biggest bike day of the last two decades:

  • Bikes Accounted for 76% of Market Street traffic! Manual bike counts by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency at Market Street and Van Ness Avenue showed that bikes accounted for 76% of all eastbound traffic between 8:30 and 9:30AM. This year’s counts showed what we see every day on our streets: More and more people are discovering the joy and convenience of biking in our city.

  • City Leaders Committed to Bike Improvements: The message was loud and clear at Bike to Work Day: City leaders want to connect the city with more physically-protected bikeways to make our streets more inviting for the growing number of people biking in San Francisco, as well as making the streets more predictable for all road users. From fixing the Hairball, to combatting double parking, City leaders made commitments for better biking in the near future.

  • Lower Polk Street Bikeway Unveiled: The Bike to Work Day celebrations got a jump-start this year, thanks to the unveiling of the new Polk Street contraflow bikeway. Lower Polk Street’s physically-protected bikeway exemplifies a design that welcomes people of all ages to bike on it, from an 8-year-old kid to her 80-year-old grandmother. Though only three blocks, this bikeway provides a crucial connector for the thousands of people pedaling between bustling Market Street and the business corridor on Polk Street.

  • Welcome New SF Bicycle Coalition Members: Thanks to our incredible Bicycle Ambassadors, we signed up hundreds of new SF Bicycle Coalition members on Bike to Work Day. Members are the backbone of our organization, providing the funding, people power, ideas and clout necessary to achieve our mission. Thank you to everyone who joined or renewed for adding your voice to our call for better bicycling conditions. Your membership helps to ensure that we have the resources to win protected bikeways on key streets like Polk, Market, 2nd and more! If you missed us on Bike to Work Day, you can join or renew online at sfbike.org/join

Vision Zero Gains Momentum

Vision ZeroWe are pleased to report that Vision Zero -- the goal of reaching zero traffic fatalities by 2024, championed by the SF Bicycle Coalition, Walk SF and our partner organizations -- is gaining momentum. Last week, both the SF Public Health Commission & the SF Police Commission unanimously endorsed strong Vision Zero policies. The list of city decision-makers now officially supporting Vision Zero also includes the Mayor, Board of Supervisors, SF Municipal Transportation Authority, Department of Public works and others.

Unfortunately, new data released by the SFPD shows that while citations are up and collisions are down, the increase in citations is not in keeping with the SFPD’s commitment to “Focus on the Five,” a data-driven policy of using limited enforcement for the most dangerous behaviors at the most dangerous intersections.

In fact, the largest increase in citations is of people walking (350%) and biking (191%). Meanwhile, the increase of total citations on the Focus on the Five (the five most dangerous behaviors as defined by SFPD collision data) only showed a 3% increase – from 22% - 25% of all citations.

To stay up to date and help on our enforcement work and Vision Zero, sign up for the campaign here.

Welcome Tyler, New Policy Director

Tyler FrisbeeWe’re excited to welcome Tyler Frisbee as our new Policy Director. Tyler comes to the SF Bicycle Coalition with a wealth of experience in transportation policy. Previous to that she worked at 1,000 Friends of Oregon and founded a nonprofit, Vote Clamantis, to engage college students in the presidential primary process. She now lives in San Francisco’s Lower Haight, and when she’s not biking can be found hiking, attempting to grow tomato plants and baking.
