Dear Kevin, THIS WEEK:
NEWS & UPDATES Check Out Our New Website! We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the new sfbike.org website -- just in time for Bike Month and the 20th Anniversary of Bike to Work Day! Our new site has been completely revamped, rewritten and redesigned in an effort to make it easier for you to learn about and take action on the campaigns that impact you the most. Here are a few features that we think you’ll really enjoy:
Huge thanks to long-time member, Jean Kao, for her hundreds of hours of work on this site, as well as the team at Visceral for their terrific work in designing the site. Bike and Roll to School Week Kicks off This Weekend The biggest youth and family biking event of the year is coming right up! On April 21-25, thousands of kids and families will pedal to class for Bike and Roll to School Week. See the list of participating schools and sign up today if you don't see your school already on the list. Join us on Saturday for the Bike and Roll to School Week kick-off event at Marina Middle School from 10AM-4PM. Assembly-member Phil Ting, SF Bicycle Coalition, SF Safe Routes to School and Presidio YBike are hosting a family bicycle fair, complete with children's bike obstacle course, Freedom From Training Wheels, a 2PM on-road practice ride, a family bike equipment display and information on making San Francisco more bike friendly. The first 300 families will receive free bike equipment for children. Bring your bikes for the obstacle course, the bike train and free basic bike tune-ups. What a Compromise on Safety Looks Like As we track the number of people hurt on Polk Street under the watch of Supervisor Chiu and the City’s transportation agency, we turn our attention to the recently unveiled design. While a few elements are encouraging – like some intersection improvements and a raised bikeway northbound up to California – we are disappointed by the half-measures and lack of improvements on most of Polk Street, which remains to be one of the most dangerous streets in San Francisco for people both walking and biking. Learn more about the design from our infographic and dive deeper into the details from our block by block analysis. You can also help us make sure safety is not compromised by calling David Chiu today at 415-554-7450 and letting him know that he can't continue to turn his back on your safety. Protect Vulnerable Road Users Throughout California Join the California Bicycle Coalition’s social media push to support California’s Vulnerable Road Users Protection Act, AB 2398. Too many Californians have been injured on our streets or are mourning the death of a loved one due to distracted or negligent motorists. Protecting Californians who ride bikes, walk, run, ride horses, scooter, skateboard and work on our streets is vital in making California a better place to live. AB 2398 will protect all road users by:
This bill will remind motorists of their obligation to be cautious of each person on our streets. Sign CalBike's petition and pressure our representatives to support the Vulnerable Road Users Protection Act. Help make our streets more livable, and take California one step closer to reaching CalBike’s goal of tripling the number of people riding bikes by 2020.
