Dear Kevin, THIS WEEK:
Know an adult who never learned to bike, but always wanted to? We’re leading a number of “Adult Learn to Ride” classes this year, and we’re excited to welcome more people to biking! NEWS & UPDATES Members Say “Fund Biking” Loud and ClearWe'd like to thank the many members who took the time to speak to the SF Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA) Board of Directors last week about getting serious about funding biking. Shockingly, the agency currently spends less than 1% of its budget on biking, and its extremely slow rollout of new and improved bikeways shows it. We stood with members at the MTA hearing to ask the agency to increase that spending to 8% so that the agency can really start moving on building a complete, citywide network of comfortable bikeways. Learn what’s at stake in this critical City decision and get involved in the campaign. Join Us for “Valentines for Vision Zero” Event on February 14In early January, the SF Bicycle Coalition and Walk San Francisco led a coalition of nearly two-dozen community partners to announce Vision Zero, a call for San Francisco to eliminate ALL fatal and serious traffic collisions within 10 years. With multiple pedestrian deaths already in 2014, we're asking you to help mark this year's Valentine's Day by joining Walk SF and the SF Bicycle Coalition at the corner of Van Ness and Grove to continue urging city leaders to deliver on critical Engineering, Enforcement and Education initiatives that will make our streets safe for everyone. If you have a loved one who was injured or killed on our roads, you yourself were a victim of a traffic crime, or you simply believe everyone has a right to walk and bike without fear on our streets, please join us: Valentines for Vision Zero RSVP now to help build the movement.Sign Up for Bike and Roll to School WeekLet’s celebrate the power of biking, community and health with Bike to School Week! Need a new family bike? We’re holding a raffle for an EdgeRunner bike donated by Xtracycle! This sweet ride has an electric assist and child seats already attached. Enter the Parent Raffle today! Check Out the Love on Wheels Photos!Oh, what a night! There's no doubt that bike-y connections were made at “Love on Wheels” last week. Check out the photos from the photobooth here! On stage, 50+ contestants shared the down-low on their bike preferences and 90’s past. Meanwhile, the crowd joined in the fun by cheering on the contestants, crafting fly slap-bracelets and gettin’ jiggy on the dancefloor with DJs shOOey, Aaron Pope and Sinned. Events like this would not be possible without the dedicated support of our amazing volunteers, so huge thanks to our 50+ member-volunteers who hung streamers, staffed registration, organized lovelorn bachelors and bachelorettes, parked bikes (even in the rain!) and so much more. Good News and Bad for Market StreetLast week, the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution calling on the City and MTA to move forward as soon as possible with the "Market on the Move" pilot program to expand private auto restrictions on our busiest bicycle, pedestrian and transit corridor. While it’s good to see support from the Board of Supervisors on this important pilot, there is still no plan from the MTA to actually implement these pilots. The MTA has committed to painting transit-only lanes to help speed up Muni, but there is still no plan to implement more auto restrictions and make this main corridor safer. At the MTA Board retreat last week, multiple Board members joined us in expressing frustration over the inaction on Market pilots. The message that we need a better Market Street now isn't getting through to MTA staff, so we're asking you turn up the volume. Don't let the MTA get away with continuing to do nothing: speak up at the next MTA Board meeting on February 18, 1PM, City Hall Room 400 to let MTA staff know that you are tired of waiting and that the status quo can't continue. Email paolo@sfbike.org if you plan to attend. We’re Hiring! Join our StaffAlways dreamed of making biking your day job? This may be your chance! WalkFirst SurveyMultiple City agencies are collaborating to implement solutions that make our streets safer. By using a data-driven method in coordination with community feedback, their goals include creating high-quality walkable neighborhoods as well as significantly decreasing serious and fatal collisions. They have developed an innovative survey to understand your priorities when it comes to designing safer streets. Be a part of deciding how and where to fund these projects! Video: NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio Makes Historic “Vision Zero” AnnouncementThis year, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition partnered with Walk SF to launch a local Vision Zero campaign. We’re pleased to see that some City leaders have joined us in support for adopting Vision Zero, but so far there has been no set plan of action or money committed to reducing and eventually eliminating traffic fatalities. In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio has already committed to Vision Zero and is making clear plans and funding to reduce traffic fatalities. Watch this great video that showcases true City leadership for safer streets.

After a basic bike maintenance session, the class will practice bike maneuvering skills in a car-free practice area before riding on the streets in small, intimate groups led by instructors.
