Want a Better Ride in 2014? Your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has big plans for Connecting the City in 2014. You’ll hear a lot about our high-profile campaigns for Polk, Potrero, 2nd Street, and Market Street, but we’re also building important connections along Holloway, Sunset Blvd, Arguello, Columbus, and other locations in 2014. Our Connecting the City Campaign envisions 100 miles of protected crosstown bikeways, but we need your help. Please make a gift today and double the impact of your contribution while helping us connect San Francisco with protected bikeways. Several generous donors have created a $25,000 matching gift opportunity to help us reach our year-end fundraising goal. Please help us make your ride better in 2014 by making a gift today of $25, $50, $100, or a symbolic amount of your choice. Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000. Show Your Support for "Market on the Move" Do you support speeding up MUNI, improving bike safety, and revitalizing historic Market Street? Market on the Move is a two-year pilot program to further reduce private auto traffic on Market Street and phase in improvements already proposed bythe Better Market Street plan. In 2009 the SFMTA and other City agencies successfully implemented transportation pilots that led to dramatic increases in bike ridership and MUNI speeds, and Market on the Move builds on that momentum. With the Better Market Street project several years away from construction, Market on the Move will immediately make Market Street feel safer and more inviting for residents, employees, and visitors. The safety improvements for people biking and walking on Market Street cannot wait any longer. Send a letter to the SFMTA Board and Supervisors Chiu and Kim calling for a safer Market Street! Last Call for Bike-y Holiday Gifts from our Store Ding-Ding! Increased Calls for Polk Street Pilot As the City inches ahead with the environmental review of the official Polk Street Improvement Project, passionate pleas for a safer Polk Street continue unabated from our members, neighbors and community groups like Folks For Polk, which recently released their Recommendations for the official project. Cheryl Brinkman, vice-chairman of the SFMTA Board, recently joined the chorus and called for a Polk Street alternative with the greatest safety improvements, citing both the high number of injuries in the corridor and the desires of the SFMTA’s own Policy and Governance Committee. In addition, vice-chairman Brinkman called for a pilot project on Polk Street, from McAllister to Union, much like the one on the ground on Folsom Street. Visit sfbike.org/polk and contact City leaders and let them know how important this corridor is. Or join our Central City Member Committee at our next scheduled meeting on Monday, December 16 at 5:30PM at the SF Bicycle Coalition Offices at 833 Market St, 10th Floor. Families and Kids Rolling to School All Year
Families that walk and bike to school in December warm up on cold mornings: the exercise balances against the seasonal tendency to stay indoors and eat more while celebrating holidays. The SF Safe Routes To School partnership includes the SF Bicycle Coalition and works with 15 schools, encouraging biking and walking through school prizes and other incentives. Family Biking programs are available to all, as are Safe Routes Resources like the 4 Fun Ways to Get To School. Sign up now for more information or contact Family & Schools Program Manager Nancy Buffum 415/431-2453 x314, nancy@sfbike.org. Dress warmly and get rolling! A Marina for All — Community Meeting on December 11 The City is holding its second community meeting to discuss the Bay Trail along Marina Boulevard between Scott and Baker. It will be next Wednesday, December 11th at 6PM, at the Moscone Recreation Center (1800 Chestnut Street). We need you to speak up about what you want to see and ensure that the Bay Trail remains a safe and enjoyable experience for people walk and bike on the path. A hot topic will be the issue of parking along the path, which is only allowed for a small number of boat owners that have their boats docked at the marina. We are looking toward options to relocate this parking to a nearby location so that the Bay Trail remains an open, safe space for the public to enjoy. If you can’t make it, please write a letter to Phil Ginsburg, the general manager of SF Rec & Parks at phil.ginsburg@sfgov.org to urge a safe, enjoyable experience as the priority along our beautiful northern waterfront. MEMBERS ONLY Holiday Member Mingle Join the SF Bicycle Coalition for a pre-holiday member mingle on December 12 to chat with some of your friendly SF Bicycle Coalition staff and fellow members! We’ll share up-to-date information about our campaigns and member programs, and want to hear what’s on your mind. Do you have a friend, relative, or co-worker who wants to become a member? Bring them with you and we’ll get their membership rolling!

VIDEO: People Behaving Badly: Drivers in the Bike Lanes
KRON4's Stanley Roberts has tackled a lot of bad street behavior in his People Behaving Badly segments. Last week he tackled one near and dear to our work: keeping bike lanes free and clear for people riding. In this video, Roberts catches lots of drivers driving in the bike lanes and gets the SFPD traffic division to take note. We're urging the police to crack down on double parking and driving in the bike lanes, and thank Roberts for adding to those calls. |
