Progress, Potential and the Slow Pace of Change This year, your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition made great strides in making our city streets safer for the growing number of people biking. We have won improvements like the permanent lift of the bike ban on BART and the installation of the enforcement camera at Market and Octavia, San Francisco’s most dangerous intersection, but there are still dangerous gaps in the network. We need your support today to fix those gaps and help connect our city. We are gearing up for even bigger action on major corridors like Polk, Market and 2nd Streets and we can’t do it without your help. A special gift today of $10, $25, $50 or more will help us stand up on your behalf for safer, more civilized streets.
A Safer Potrero is Only One Meeting Away
Two weeks ago, the community spoke up loud and clear: a safer Potrero for everyone is not negotiable. Decision makers paid heed and made sure to include not just one, but two options that included buffered bike lanes, wider sidewalks and a transit lane, with Option 2 proposing the widest sidewalks and the most protected bike lanes. In spite of this resounding victory, a repeat performance will be required this Thursday at the 5th (!!) Potrero Streetscape Improvements Community Open House at Brava Theater, 2781 24th Street. Come and support Option 2 anytime between 6 and 8PM and help make Potrero safer for everyone. If you are unable to make it, visit sfbike.org/potrero and contact your Supervisors and let them know how important this project is. Partnering with Bay Area Bike Share for Education This week your SF Bicycle Coalition is offering the first ever Intro to Urban Bicycling Workshop in partnership with Bay Area Bike Share. Have you had a chance to ride one of those new, pretty mint bikes yet? Are you unsure of the Rules of the Road and looking to brush up on your skills? Come on down to the SF Bicycle Coalition HQ this Wednesday from 7-8PM learn the basics of Urban Bicycling — covering bicycling for everyday riding in SF, the rules of the road, and route planning. This course is a great introduction for people who are considering bicycling with Bay Area Bike Share or getting back on the dusty bike in the garage. No bicycle is necessary for this class and the class is free of charge.
Organize for Fair Police Enforcement on Wednesday SF Bicycle Coalition members and allies will meet to strategize and mobilize supporters to engage in this important campaign for fair and equal enforcement on our streets for those of us bicycling and walking. If you’re interested in helping, join us this Wednesday, November 20 at 5:30PM at the SF Bicycle Coalition office (833 Market St., 10th fl). Thanks to everyone who sent in letters and spoke up at last month’s hearing on police response to bike/ped cases. We’re making progress in our calls for fair and equal enforcement, and need your help in moving this important campaign forward. Tube Times Distributors Needed
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition needs your help distributing the Tube Times, our quarterly print newsletter. Our amazing member-volunteers distribute the Tube Times four times a year from three distribution points throughout San Francisco, and we’re currently looking for volunteers to deliver to Chrome Bags, City Cycles, High Trails Cyclery, Huckleberry Bikes, LGBT Center, the Main Library, Mash, New Wheel, Pacific Bike and Boards, Piccino and Roaring Mouse. If you think you can fill one of our distribution gaps, contact Tube Times Distribution Guru Brando via email and include your phone number. Thanks for your help. VIDEO: Via RecreActiva: A Transformative Ciclovia for Guadalajara
We're often inspired by other cities' advancement in reclaiming streets for people to enjoy. But it's not just longtime leaders like Copenhagen and Amsterdam that can serve as examples for how to make our city's more bike, pedestrian and transit-friendly. Take a look at this terrific Streetfilm about Guadalajara, Mexico, where 41 miles of city streets are closed to cars every Sunday for a massive Ciclovia. And check out the huge support from businesses for a better, safer, more livable Guadalajara.
