A Tragic Day on SoMa Streets

Dear Kevin,

It is with deep sadness that I share with you that another person was hit and killed while biking in SoMa. Today’s victim (name and details still unknown) was the fourth person to be killed biking in or near SoMa just this year.

Each of these fatal crashes had the same tragic pattern: the victims were hit by the operators of large vehicles on SoMa’s high-speed and poorly designed streets. Our hearts go out to the friends and family of these riders, whose lives were tragically cut short on the dangerous SoMa streets.

These deadly crashes on SoMa streets simply cannot be considered one-off “accidents.” These deaths are preventable and within the power of the City to change immediately.

Here's what you can do:

  1. Send a letter to Mayor Lee: Call for comprehensive safety improvements on SoMa streets. The Folsom pilot that will be in the ground by the end of this year is a much-needed and welcome start, but it’s clearly not enough.

  2. Come to our SoMa Committee Meeting: Our committee meetings are where the real advocacy takes place. Shape and plug in to our advocacy to improve SoMa and meet likeminded members. Everyone welcome; no prior experience necessary. Monday, October 21, 5:30-7 PM at our office: 833 Market Street.

  3. Speak Up at our SoMa Action Station: We’ll be hosting a Safe SoMa outreach action station on Wednesday, October 23, from 7:30-9:30 AM at 14th and Folsom Streets. Pedal by and show your support for safety improvements.

  4. Join us at the Folsom Street Design Meeting: The Mayor heard your calls for Folsom improvements in the wake of Amelie Le Moullac’s recent death. Because of your strong calls, the City is implementing a pilot of buffered bikeways and traffic calming on Folsom. On Wednesday, October 23 from 6-7:30 PM at SoMa Recreation Center (270 6th Street at Folsom) you can weigh in on the designs and show your support for the many more improvements needed to make SoMa Streets safe.

Thank you for your continued support in helping the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition make our streets safer for all of us. It is devastatingly clear that while we’ve made some great strides in the past years, there are parts of our city that remain unacceptably unsafe for those of us biking and walking. Thank you for taking action to improve SoMa’s deadly streets. Click here for more information on our work for Safe SoMa Streets.

Sincerely,

Kit Hodge
