Troubling Interaction with Police? Share Your Story.

Leah Shahum and Sergeant ErnstThe San Francisco Police Department’s terrible mishandling of the Amelie Le Moullac case has raised concerns about the way the police respond to other bike-related cases. We have heard from many members over the years that they have had troubling interactions with the police regarding bike issues, ranging from refusal to take an incident report to not fully investigating the incident to exhibiting a blatant bias against bike riders.

The City is finally looking into the police handling of bike/ped cases. Supervisor Jane Kim has called for a public hearing at the Board of Supervisors' Public Safety Committee to discuss the SF Police Department's protocol on investigating vehicle collisions involving people biking and walking. The hearing will be held October 3 at 10:00AM at City Hall.

If you have had a negative interaction with the police regarding a bike-issue, please tell us about it on this form. We’re collecting stories and speakers for the October 3 hearing and for our meetings with the police to show the higher-ups that Amelie’s case was not just a one-off.

SHARE YOUR STORY TODAY!

Open Houses for Wiggle & Potrero Ave, September 24

Earlier this year, the City launched two separate projects to improve both Potrero Avenue and the iconic Wiggle bike route. Don't miss next Tuesday’s community open houses for another opportunity to provide feedback and learn how these two critical corridors will look in just a short time. The Wiggle Community Open House will be held at the Electrical Workers Union Hall, 55 Fillmore Street from 5-7PM and the Potrero Community Open House will be held at the SF General Hospital Cafeteria, 1001 Potrero Avenue, from 6-8PM. Contact chema@sfbike.org if you have any questions regarding either of these two projects.

Welcome John Calaway, Development Director!

John Calaway, Development DirectorWe’re thrilled to welcome John Calaway as our new Development Director! John comes to the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition with more than 25 years of experience raising funds for conservation and education efforts. Most recently, he served as the Sierra Club’s Deputy Chief Advancement Officer. John is a former SFBC Board Member and our former Treasurer, so he comes to the staff position with a wealth of knowledge of our organization. Say hi to him at Tour de Fat or catch him pedaling in the bike lanes on his nice Dutch bike.

SF State/19th Avenue Bike Planning, September 24

Do you bike near SF State? Want to see improvements? Then plan to attend the City’s community meeting to discuss the 19th Avenue Transit Study. Though you may know the plan mostly because of its ideas for realigning the MUNI light rail, the project is also an opportunity to speak up for significant bike improvements in the area. Connections to Holloway, safe crossing at Sloat, and much much more. Be sure to attend!

VIDEO: Use BART's Quick Planner When Taking Your Bike

Young woman on BART platformThe all day bikes on BART pilot is now in its third month — and so far everything seems to be working really well. We’ve heard from members on both sides of the Bay that our work to remove the bike blackout period has resulted in a shorter, better commute and made regional travel by bike easier. As a reminder, bikes are not allowed on crowded trains--but how can you tell if a train really is too crowded? BART’s new Quick Planner can help. Check it out.
