NEWS & UPDATES

We Did It! Changes Coming to Folsom Street!

Safe SoMa Streets Now!Thank you to the more than 800 people who sent letters to Mayor Lee calling for Safer SoMa Streets. Your calls and personal stories about why Folsom and other SoMa streets need safety improvements have been heard.

We’ve gotten commitment from the City that they will implement a pilot redesign of Folsom Street that will include separated or buffered bikeways!

This is great news for safer SoMa streets, and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is pleased to see the City finally moving forward with long-overdue improvements to Folsom Street. Unfortunately, it took the death of a young woman for the City to finally take note of how unsafe this main bicycle corridor is.

Read all about it and find out how you can help move this project forward.

Sign the Petition to Expand Bay Area Bike Share

Expand Bay Area Bike ShareThe beautiful minty fresh bikes are catching on as popular ways to get around town -- but only a very small part of town. The Mayor needs to hear from San Francisco that we are hungry for a much larger bike share system.

Bring bike share to your neighborhood: Sign the petition today!

Separated Bikeway on the Waterfront This Week

Biking is getting better -- temporarily -- on the waterfront. The City has installed a separated bicycle facility along the north side of The Embarcadero between Washington Street and Pier 23 which will last from Sunday, September 8 through Sunday, September 15. The bikeway will be a great way to relieve the crowding expected with the America’s Cup races -- and also a way to make your waterfront commute a lot more comfortable. Take a ride and check it out. Extra exciting: there is also a temporary bikeway on Van Ness Avenue near Aquatic Park to help guide racegoers through the crowds.

Want to see permanent separated, protected bikeways on the waterfront? Visit sfbike.org/embarcadero to send a letter to the Mayor.

Help Make SoMa and Tenderloin Streets Safer

Earlier this summer we held our first SoMa and Central City Member Committee meeting. Since then, Central City streets, particularly Folsom and Polk, have attracted much attention due to their deadly and unsafe designs and their impact on people walking and biking. Come to our next Central City Member Committee meeting on Monday, September 23 at 5:30PM and help plan how we can make Western SoMa and the Tenderloin streets safe for all users. The meeting will be held at our offices on 833 Market, 10th Floor. RSVP today by emailing Chema.

Do You Bike to School? Invite Friends and School Families Along for the Ride

Safe Routes to SchoolMany parents and caregivers roll to school with their children, with child seats and tag-alongs for the littlest riders. Others are not so sure about traffic and safety. Families that are comfortable biking to school can encourage those who want to try. Walk and Roll to School Day October 9 ‎ is a way to meet other families that take the same routes to school, build community and encourage others to get a healthy start to the school day. Sign up your school for Walk and Roll to School Day by September 16! There are free resources to make your event a success.
