NEWS & UPDATES

Tell the Mayor: No More Deaths on SoMa Streets

Safe SOMA Streets NowOur hearts go out to the family and friends of Amelie Le Moullac, 24, who was hit and killed while biking on Folsom Street last week. Already this year, three bike riders have been hit and killed on San Francisco streets. In each case, the crash involved a large truck.

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is calling on the Mayor to commit to crucial safety measures to help prevent further tragedies like this one from happening. We’re calling for immediate action from the City, including a safer Folsom Street redesign, big truck retrofits and mandatory street safety education for large vehicle operators.

TAKE ACTION!

  • Join us for our On-Street Action. We’ll be out at Folsom & 6th Street on Wednesday, August 21 from 8-10AM. Pedal by and add your voice to the calls for Safe SoMa Streets Now!

  • Send a letter to the Mayor, calling for Safe SoMa Streets Now!

  • Send a Tweet to show your support for Safe SoMa Streets. Tweet @sfmta_muni @mayoredlee @supejanekim "Make #soma streets safe for people biking and walking." sfbike.org/soma"

A Safe Green Holloway between City College and SF State

Last week, the first Holloway Green Street community open house launched the Public Utilities Commission's latest project to make improve Holloway Street – connecting Balboa Park and City College to SF State – for everyone. Learn more about the project and chime in by filling out their questionnaire. Help us make sure bicycle improvements are a top priority and that the project area is extended to Ocean Avenue up Harold Street to ensure a seamless route.

Meeting for Calmer Gateway to the Wiggle, August 28

The new Fell and Oak bikeways end at Scott Street, a generally calm residential street that can become chaotic and confusing as vehicles queue to enter the neighborhood forcing people biking and walking to wade through the resulting congestion. As the vision of the Wiggle as a Neighborhood Greenway advances, a calmer and safer Scott Street becomes more important.

If you are a resident or neighbor of Scott Street between Page and Fell, come to the forthcoming Scott Street Traffic Calming Meeting on August 28, 6:30-8PM at the Harvey Milk Arts Center, 50 Scott Street to discuss how circulation changes can make the neighborhood better for all.

Kick Off the School Year With a Healthy Habit!

Safe Routes to SchoolWalking and biking to school gives you quality time together as a family and helps kids to arrive at school energized and ready to learn. Currently, only half of San Francisco children who live close enough to walk or bike to school actually do. The SF Bicycle Coalition is a partner in San Francisco's Safe Routes to School program, working to change this.

Want to meet other biking and biking-interested parents at your school and encourage other families to avoid the traffic snarl of school drop-offs by car?

  • Sign up here and enter a special giveaway to win $25 Sports Basement and $100 Safeway gift cards!
  • Save the Date: Walk and Roll to School Day is Wednesday, October 9, 2013.  Learn more, register your school and get free materials and support here.

VIDEO: Portland’s Bike Boulevards Become Neighborhood Greenways

StreetFilms Bike BoulevardsWe’ve been talking a lot lately about our work to get Neighborhood Greenways on the Wiggle, Halloway Street and Mission/Valencia. But without Neighborhood Greenways already on the ground in San Francisco, it’s hard to envision how they actually work. Take a look at this great Streetfilms about Portland’s Neighborhood Greenways, and imagine this calmer design in our own city.
