NEWS & UPDATES

Big Week for Bicycle Advocacy: Huge Support for Safe SoMa and Concerns Over Police Conduct in Bicyclist Fatality

Safe SoMa StreetsIf you’ve been following our blog this last week, you’re probably well aware of the myriad of on-the-ground advocacy your SF Bicycle Coalition has been involved in.

On Wednesday, we held a safety outreach station at Folsom & 6th Streets, where 24-year-old Amelie Le Moullac was hit and killed while biking on August 14. Friends of Amelie joined the SF Bicycle Coalition and hundreds of other people in signing a letter to the Mayor, calling for a redesign of Folsom Street and key safety improvements to reduce the deadly risk of trucks and bikes mixing. Thank you to the nearly 1,000 people who have signed on for supporting Safe SoMa Streets! We delivered your letters to the Mayor yesterday, but you can still sign the letter.

Our role as bicycle advocates kicked into high gear last week, when SF Bicycle Coalition staff discovered evidence that police did not have fully or fairly investigate the death of Le Moullac. At the end of our safety outreach SF Bicycle Coalition staff discovered that there was, in fact, video footage of the crash that killed Le Moullac. The SFPD had said on multiple occasions that no footage could be found.

Read about how we found this crucial video footage, what it means for other cases, and what happened when an SFPD Sergeant deliberately blocked the bike lane, forcing hundreds of people on bike into high-speed traffic.

In our 40 years of advocacy, we’ve made great strides in making San Francisco a better, safer, more civil and more livable city. But this week highlighted the how far we still have to go to make San Francisco a great city for biking. Thanks to all of our members for supporting our ongoing advocacy.

Bike Share Launches on Thursday

Bay Area Bike ShareIt’s finally here! The launch of Bay Area Bike Share! You’ve waited for years for bike share to launch in San Francisco, and finally a small pilot will go live on Thursday. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has worked closely with our peer groups to push local and regional decision-makers to expand this initial tiny pilot as quickly as possible. The SFMTA estimates that San Francisco should host a roughly 3,000 bike system, which is a lot more bikes than the initial 350 that will launch on Thursday. Enjoy bike share when it launches on Thursday! But please do take a moment to speak up for expanding the system to really serve the city:

Farewell to our Terrific Program Manager, Marc Caswell

Marc CaswellWe bid farewell to Marc Caswell after nearly five years as Program Manager. You may know Marc as the dedicated advocate who went door to door at 6th and Folsom last week and found the footage of the fatal crash that the Police claimed did not exist. Or you may know Marc as the person who’s helped you and hundreds of members each year deal with the day-to-day problems you deal with on the street; Marc may be 311’s most frequent user in San Francisco. Maybe you met Marc when he taught a bike education class for you and others, or you heard about the work he does educating taxi drivers about driving around people on bikes every week, or you worked with him to help pass great new bike parking legislation for San Francisco. Suffice it to say, Marc has been a tremendous force at the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, and in San Francisco. We wish him the best of luck with his next adventure in Los Angeles.

VIDEO: Left and Right Hooks - People Behaving Badly

Left and Right HooksIn San Francisco, the number one cause for injuries to people biking is unsafe turning by vehicles. The SF Bicycle Coalition teaches thousands of people every year how to safely navigate intersections and avoid the all-too-common ‘right hook,’ and we’ve reached out to many reporters to spread the word about how to safely turn across a bike lane. Last week, the SF Bicycle Coalition and Streetsblog talked with Stanley Roberts for his People Behaving Badly show. The end product is clear and concise and hopefully reduces conflicts at intersections. For more information on right turns, see our website and diagrams.
