Thank you for Making Your Voice Heard on Polk

Polk StreetLast week hundreds of people made their voices heard loud and clear for a safer Polk Street. Dozens of support letters with insightful and moving stories made their way to City leaders and at the Community Open House last Thursday the SFMTA heard directly just how important two-way continuous bikeways are on Polk Street from McAllister to Union streets. Their preferred alternative is not enough and we must continue advocating for a more comprehensive proposal to be considered. Send a letter of support to City leaders, or even better, call or tweet your support for a safer #Polk. Visit sfbike.org/polk for further details.

Help Shape the New Potrero Avenue

If you live or work on Potrero Avenue, you know how dangerous it can be. Much like Masonic Avenue and Second Street, it is oftentimes a highway in all but name. For years, the SF Bicycle Coalition, in collaboration with community groups like CC Puede, have pushed for a calmer and safer Potrero Avenue that takes into account the needs and requirements of people walking, biking and taking transit. Help this campaign by coming to the second official Potrero Streetscape Improvements Community Workshop tonight from 6PM to 8PM and share your thoughts about what the City’s priorities should be for this important corridor. The workshop will take place at the SF General Hospital Cafeteria, 1001 Potrero Ave. (near 22nd Street), on the second floor.

Final Vote Imminent on Bike Parking Planning Code

Bike ParkingBy the time you read this email, the Board of Supervisors may have already voted to approve a major increase to the number of bicycle parking spaces required in new and renovated buildings. We’ve been working on this legislation for years -- and we’re so proud to know that the future of San Francisco will include much more room for bikes.
This legislation is the first comprehensive update to the bike parking section of the Planning Code in nearly a decade. There are many important changes and we have detailed them on our website.

This years-long effort may not seem like the most exciting project, but if you’ve ever had your bike stolen, you understand how important it is. This just one of the many ways the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is helping to make your ride smoother and keep your bike safer. Which is why membership is such a key part of our funding; your membership dollars help keep these types of projects rolling. If you aren’t a member, we need your help -- join today!

Monthly Safety Tip: Buses and Big Trucks

SF Bicycle Coalition Tip of the MonthHere in San Francisco, we all share the road. We are proud that the SF Bicycle Coalition is the leading resource for street safety information for people on bike and driving taxis. Our instructors taught nearly 5,000 people last year! In early 2013, we worked with SFMTA staff to produce a video teaching MUNI Operators on how to share the road with bikes.

Now in 2013, we’re seeing a lot more construction in the city -- which means a lot more large vehicles. When sharing the streets with a large vehicle, remember that their blindspots are likely much larger than a car's. When riding, be sure to position yourself in a way to help ensure the driver can see you. If you find yourself riding alongside a large truck, consider slowing down or speeding up so you can see their mirrors -- that way they can see you, too.

The California Vehicle Code requires drivers turn from as far right as practicable and it's very important to change your speed so you can be seen when approaching an intersection. Riding defensively and being aware of those around you can help avoid any close calls -- the more you ride predictably, the easier it is to quickly respond to unexpected surprises from other road users. Together, we can all help make San Francisco a more vibrant city and a safer place to walk, bike and drive!
