BART Bike Ban Lifted -- Bring Your Bike on Board Any Time!

Bikes on BARTYesterday, July 8th, BART passengers were allowed to bring their bicycle on-board during Rush Hour during the extended, 5-month pilot! Originally set to begin on July 1st, the Rush-Hour Bike Ban was lifted once the BART Strike ended!.

How can you celebrate this momentous occasion? By bringing your bike on BART and being awesome while doing it. Here are a few simple rules to follow to make sure this long pilot runs as smoothly as the smaller ones. Thanks for being a great bike ambassador for bikes on BART!

  • Bikes are not allowed on the first three cars during rush hour, and never in the first car.
  • Regardless of any rule, bikes are never allowed on crowded cars. Use your good judgment.
  • Refrain from holding doors to get your bike inside, as this delays the train.
  • Be mindful of your fellow riders and make sure you are leaving other people adequate space.
  • When possible, use the designated bike space on the cars that have it.
  • Yield to pregnant, disabled and elderly passengers.

Thanks for being a great ambassador for bikes on BART! Together we can lift the ban forever, and make it easier for all of us to travel around the great Bay Area with our bikes! If you have any feedback on these changes, please let us know by emailing our Program Manager, marc@sfbike.org

Bike Parking Requirements Roll Forward

In San Francisco, all newly constructed buildings are required to provide secure bike parking for tenants, but the number is currently very low. Earlier this year, the Planning Commission unanimously supported a big increase in these requirements and a few more changes to make your commute better. Now, these changes are moving ahead to the Land Use Committee at City Hall. From stadiums to new housing; commercial buildings to retirement homes, this law will help ensure that buildings being constructed today will have enough bike parking to meet the huge and growing numbers of people who bike in San Francisco.

This Monday, July 15 at 1:30PM, the Land Use & Economic Development Committee will vote on these changes. Find out more about the new law and send in a letter of support at sfbike.org/planningcode.

TONIGHT: Open House for Mission & Valencia

Tonight at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts at 2868 Mission Street, between 24th and 25th streets, the PUC and the SFMTA will hold a second community open house for the Mission Valencia Green Gateway project from 4 PM to 8 PM. The project is expected to feature improved bicycle infrastructure, like new bike lanes on Valencia between Duncan and Mission Street, in addition to new sustainable technologies, like rain gardens and permeable pavement. The project area will also be expanded to include neighboring streets like Tiffany Street, 29th Street, Duncan Street and San Jose Avenue. Drop by for half an hour to see what is in store.
