BART Bike Ban Ends Monday (for 5 months)

Bikes on BARTBeginning next Monday, July 1, BART passengers will be allowed to bring their bicycle on-board any time of the day for a full 5-month pilot! Your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has worked hard for decades to open up more bike access on BART. We’re thrilled that our long-term advocacy (along with the work of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition’s and Bikes on BART group) means that you and thousands of others will have an easier regional commute.

How can you celebrate this momentous occasion? By bringing your bike on BART and being awesome while doing it. Here are a few simple rules to make this 5 month pilot run as smoothly as the smaller ones. If we all do our part, a permanent lifting of the bike ban is sure to come.

• Bikes are NOT allowed in the first three cars during rush hour and never in the first car of a train.

• When you have your bike, use the elevator or stairs, not escalators, and always walk your bike.

• Keep doors and aisles clear, and yield priority seating to seniors and people with disabilities.

• In case of an evacuation, leave your bike on the train and do not let it block aisles or doors.

• Regardless of any other rule, bikes are never allowed on crowded cars. Use your good judgment and only board cars that can comfortably accommodate you and your bicycle.

Thanks for being a great ambassador for bikes on BART! Together we can lift the ban forever, and make it easier for all of us to travel around the great Bay Area with our bikes!

Introducing San Francisco’s New Bicycle Strategy!

SFMTA Bicycle StrategyLast week a solid showing of the MTA Board of Directors called upon our City’s transportation agency to pursue the most ambitious package of biking improvements outlined in the MTA’s new 2013-2018 Bicycle Strategy. Over the next five years, the agency was given a strong mandate to pursue the “System Build Out Scenario” described in this handy graphic to the right.

This decision is a huge milestone for biking in San Francisco, and one that your SF Bicycle Coalition will be working hard to turn into immediate improvements to your ride in the coming days, months and years. Read more here.

Speak up at Crucial Market Street Hearings

Last week members spoke up at a hearing of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ Land Use and Economic Development Committee about the City’s work on Market Street. Big thanks to all of the passionate members and Supervisors Scott Wiener and David Chiu for sending a clear message at the hearing that Market Street needs more improvements now, particularly east of 8th Street where the bikeway disappears. Read more about the hearing here.

Mark your calendars: The City will hold two more public meetings on Market Street in July, where the public can weigh in on the design options.

July 17, 6-8:30PM at Parc 55 Hotel ballroom and

July 20 from 10AM-12:30PM at the Main Library.

What an Inspiring at Golden Wheel Awards!

2013 Golden Wheel AwardsThanks to all our members, sponsors and supporters who joined us to celebrate our 21st Golden Wheel Awards last Thursday! Together, we honored the accomplishments of the 2013 award winners and were inspired by dynamic speakers!

Congratulations to 2013 Golden Wheel Award honorees! The large team from CC Puede filled the stage and Fran Taylor spoke about the challenges and successes of their grassroots work on Cesar Chavez. Yerba Buena Community Benefit District’s Cathy Maupin said even more improvements are on the way for this central neighborhood!

The crowd went wild for the powerful lineup of speakers! Your SF Bicycle Coalition Leah Shahum kicked things off by thanking the generous sponsors and members. She also called on the decision-makers in the room for improvements and stated “our elected leaders have a responsibility to prioritize safety of our citizens on our streets”. SF Transportation Director Ed Reiskin charmed the audience with his support for the SF Bicycle Coalition’s work and his thoughtful introduction of the esteemed keynote speaker from NYC, Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan.

NYC Transportation Commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, lived up to her reputation with an inspiring and rousing presentation that highlighted her transformative work in New York City and how San Francisco can follow her lead. With so many notable lines from Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, it’s hard to pick just a few. Our favorites include:

“When you push the status quo, the status quo pushes back at you."

“There are parts of Brooklyn that if you stop, someone will chain a bike to you.”

“Every time we put down a protected bikeway, it's 50% safer for ALL users.”

No doubt we’ll all be buzzing about the 2013 Golden Wheel Awards for years to come and we’re already working on topping it next year! Thank you!

Opponents Still Trying to Stop Masonic Avenue Redesign

Last Tuesday, opponents to the already approved Masonic Avenue redesign project once again loudly spoke up against ending the carnage on the deadly boulevard and in favor of parking and even more delays to the project at a committee hearing of the SF County Transportation Authority. Led by a new group calling itself Save Masonic, opponents unabashedly called the proposed parking loss “a bit of a catastrophe”, and claimed that the number of deaths on Masonic did not “sound like a lot”.

The already-approved Masonic Avenue Complete Street Project, much like Second Street Improvement Project and Mansell Corridor Improvements in McLaren Park, resulted from extensive community involvement that acknowledged that these corridors required substantial safety improvements for all users, whether they walk, bike or take transit. This morning, the SF County Transportation Authority will make the final decision and we hope they will prioritize safety and choose to fund these critical projects. Learn the results by visiting sfbike.org/masonic.
