Biker Bulletin News

BikeThe Market Street bike counter is offline during repaving. But your commute always "counts" with us! We'll update you when we hear more from the SFMTA.

Market Street Repaving Underway

Market StreetBig news for our city’s busiest bicycle corridor: The full outside lanes and bikeways of Market Street are getting repaved this summer, resulting in a safer, smoother commute for the you and the thousands of others who ride this major biking corridor every day.

Fresh pavement and new, bright green paint are already on the ground between Van Ness Avenue and 6th Street. The rest of Market will be repaved later in June and early July. So this summer, you’ll have a smoother, safer ride all the way from Van Ness Avenue to the Embarcadero!

We’ve heard from our members that the poor pavement quality on Market Street is of utmost concern for them, and often a deterrent to riding their bikes to work. That’s why the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has made improving Market Street one of our primary campaigns.

Your SF Bicycle Coalition has been pushing for near-term improvements to Market Street, while still advocating for a much bigger and truly Better Market Street that includes safe, separated bikeways the full length. We’re proud that our relentless calls for Market Street improvements resulted in patch pavements of 35 sections last year, and a full, fresh repaving starting last week!

It’s taken countless meetings and a hundreds of hours to win you smoother pavement on Market Street and across the city. We can’t write grants or get funding for this long-term and often tedious advocacy; it’s only supported through our membership dollars. Thank you to our incredible members for supporting this work. If you like the smoother pavement and want more improvements to Market Street, join the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition today.

We Need You at an Important Market Street Hearing on June 17

Smooth pavement is far from the only improvement needed on Market Street. Your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition will continue to push for the larger safety improvements to Market Street and you can help us get this important project back on track!

The Board of Supervisors’ Land Use Committee will be holding a hearing on the delays in the Better Market Street project on Monday, June 17 at 9:00 AM. This hearing is a rare chance for you to directly express your frustration with delays with this incredibly important project. E-mail marc@sfbike.org to let us know if you can attend and help City leaders understand just how important it is to improve biking, walking and transit on Market Street.

Tickets are Going Fast for Goldenwheel

21st Annual Golden Wheel AwardsThis is your chance to meet a transportation superstar! Hear first-hand how Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan dramatically transformed New York Streets, and how we can do the same here in San Francisco.

She’s responsible for turning Times Square into a plaza for people to enjoy, she launched the largest bike share in the country last month, she turned Broadway into a green street and she’s added 300 miles of new bikeways in the Big Apple.

This is an event not to be missed -- an evening of mingling, open bar, heavy hors d'oeuvres and inspiration. Best yet, your ticket supports the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s work to transform our streets into safer, better, more livable spaces -- just like Sadik-Khan has done in New York!

Saying Farewell to our Amazing Planning Director, Neal Patel

It is with a combination of sadness and excitement that we bid farewell to our outstanding Planning Director, Neal Patel. After six years, Neal is leaving the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition to work at the SFMTA, where he will be working on a number bike, pedestrian and traffic calming projects with the Livable Streets Program.

Neal will be greatly missed by our staff and countless members who got to know him through his leadership on crucial and challenging projects like Fell and Oak street, Polk Street and Masonic, as well as countless bike riders that he led for our members.

While sad for us, this is great news for San Francisco. Neal will bring his knowledge, diplomacy and passion for bicycle and pedestrian improvement projects to the City, where he can help make great change to our streets. Come say farewell to Neal at Golden Wheel on June 20, his last day.

Want to follow in Neal’s dapper footsteps and become a part of the SF Bike Coalition’s passionate Program team? We’re hiring for two positions:

Video: Bike Boulevards

Bike BoulevardsThe Wiggle could become San Francisco’s first neighborhood greenway. What exactly is a neighborhood greenway? Find out in this video, which profiles Portland’s developing neighborhood greenways. Portland has one of the most extensive and developed networks of these traffic-calmed streets.  By 2015, their goal is for 80% of residents to live within a half-mile of one. Watch the video below to see how they do it. And come to the Wiggle Open House tonight!
