THURSDAY: BART to Vote on Lifting the Rush-Hour Bike Ban!

End the Rush-hour Bike BanFor decades, your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has been working to improve bike access on BART. In 1975, we were able to gain limited access for bicycles, with a permit. In 1997, we were successful in eliminating the onerous requirements of the permit. And more recently, we helped usher in two successful pilots to test removing the bike blackout period. The results were positive, showing that 81% of riders thought there was enough room with bikes and 71% (double check) wanted to remove the blackout permanently.

On Thursday, BART will finally vote on whether to lift the bike blackout ban completely!

And we need you to speak up at the hearing. RSVP for the May 23 hearing.

What: BART Hearing to End the Rush-Hour Bike Ban

When: Thursday, May 23 6:00 PM

Big News for Bike Parking!

On Thursday, the SF Planning Commission unanimously approved changes to the Planning Code to increase the number of bike parking required in new residential and commercial construction. After years of advocacy from the SF Bicycle Coalition, the Planning Department brought these changes forward and are ready to help keep San Francisco rolling forward to better bicycling.

Now, the legislation moves ahead to the Board of Supervisors before becoming law. These changes will help new buildings meet the large and growing demand for people who need a safe place to store their bike at work or at home. The existing legislation, passed nearly a decade ago, was good for its time -- but with the bicycling growing 71% since the City began keeping count in 2006, this updated code was badly needed. The hearing date has not been scheduled yet, so please email Program Manager marc@sfbike.org to be added to the campaign email list and be alerted to the next step in the process.

The SFMTA, Mayor’s Office of Disability, Department of Aging and Adult Services, Bay Area Outreach and Education Program (BORP) and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition are thrilled announce an adaptive cycling event on Sunday, June 9 during the Dogpatch Sunday Streets. If you live, work or travel through the South of Market neighborhood, come to the SPUR Assembly Hall, located at 654 Mission Street, at 6 PM on Thursday to help ensure the proposed design is protective of people biking on this important thoroughfare. Click here for more information.

  • Polk Street: Thanks to our members for joining our Polk Street committee last week - we’ve outlined a few ways folks can volunteer to build support for continuous bikeways and pedestrian safety improvements on Polk Street. See sfbike.org/polk to see how you can help and don’t forget to take the SFMTA survey to voice your support!

  • Point Lobos and Great Highway: Hooray! Point Lobos and the Great Highway now have smooth pavement and new bike lanes!  With our member support, the SF Bicycle Coalition has advocated for these improvements the last few years.
