This Year’s Bike to Work Day was one for the History Books!

Market Street Bike Counter on Bike to Work DayWow! We can unequivocally say that this year’s Bike to Work Day was the biggest and best yet! Thank you to all of the amazing San Francisco Bicycle Coalition members, volunteers and interns who made the big day such a success.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Record-breaking bike counts! Manual bike counts by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency at Market Street and Van Ness Avenue showed that bikes accounted for 76% of all eastbound traffic between 8:30 and 9:30AM. That’s the highest percentage since the SFMTA began counting in 1998. All totaled, in the last five years, Bike to Work Day bike counts have increased a whopping 40.7%! That’s something we can all celebrate!

While the highest ever Bike to Work Day bike counts are impressive, the counts the SFMTA conducted on an average workday are equally impressive. On Thursday, April 18, bikes accounted for 66% of all inbound traffic at Market and Van Ness, up 3% since last year. Bike traffic has soared in the last five years on Market Street on regular days, going from about 38% of trips to 67% of vehicles on the street.

  • New Market Street Bike Counter Unveiled: Were you one of the thousands of bike riders counted by the new Market Street bike counter? Installed between 9th and 10th Streets, the Copenhagen-style digital counter showed the real-time display of the huge numbers of people pedaling past it. The SFMTA is now working to fine-tune the counter to make sure that it accurately showcases the huge and growing number of people biking.

  • Oak Street Bikeway Striped: Just in time for Bike to Work Day, the SFMTA painted the Oak Street bike lane. While these improvements are a welcomed relief from the previous design, there is still a ways to go to finishing the Fell and Oak Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Project. As you know, we’ve been working on these improvements for over a decade and the SFMTA will be installing pedestrian bulb-outs and install physical separation from car traffic in the coming months. While we are cheering the creation of dedicated, green bike space on Oak Street, our advocacy is far from over. Find out how you can help at sfbike.org/fell.

  • BART Bike Pilot and Opening up All-Day Access: On Bike to Work Day, your staff and a few key members were speaking up for better bike access at the BART Board of Directors meeting in Oakland. In the first of two meetings, we had ten people speak in favor of lifting the Rush-Hour Bike Ban and heard some encouraging comments from the Board of Directors -- but we still need more support. On May 23rd, the BART Board of Directors will vote on whether or not to lift the ban permanently, and we need you to share you story: send a letter today, and come speak up at the May 23rd hearing!

Bike Share Pilot Re-Expansion in Discussion

Bike ShareWe have heard loud and clear from you and many other people that you want a large-scale bike share system, as soon as possible. The pilot program scheduled to launch in August 2013 is currently planned to offer 700 bikes around the region, down from the 1,000 initially promised. But thanks to Supervisors Scott Wiener and David Campos who are working at the regional and local level to secure funding with the support of the SF Bicycle Coalition, the pilot program has cleared the first hurdle to scaling back up to 1,000 bikes around the region (500 in San Francisco). This funding is in the process of being approved at the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), Bay Area Air Management Quality District (BAAQMD) and SF County Transportation Authority. Meanwhile, we are working hard to secure additional funding to scale the program up to its full size in San Francisco, approximately 3,000 bikes. Get involved in the bike share campaign by sending an email Kit Hodge at kit@sfbike.org.

Bike Parking Requirements at Planning Comm. Thursday

In San Francisco, all newly constructed buildings are required to provide secure bike parking for tenants -- but the number is currently very low. Thanks to years of advocacy from the SF Bicycle Coalition, the Planning Department is proposing a big increase in these requirements and a few more tweaks to make your commute better. From stadiums to new housing; commercial buildings to retirement homes, this law will help ensure that buildings being constructed today will have enough bike parking to meet the huge and growing numbers of people who bike in San Francisco.

This Thursday, May 16 at noon, the Planning Commission will vote on these changes. Find out more about the new law and send in a letter of support at sfbike.org/planningcode.

Video: Time-Lapse Video of Market Street

Bike to Work Day 2013 time lapse videoThis year’s Bike to Work Day we finally did what we’ve been dreaming of for years: set up a time-lapse video on Market Street. With the new bike counter, all eyes were already on Market Street, and as always, tons of bike wheels were as well. Our amazing volunteer photographer Volker Neumann mounted a GoPro camera on the telephone pole and set it to take pictures every five seconds. Here it is, a time-lapse of our busiest bikeway on the busiest day of the year! See if you can find yourself.
