Biker Bulletin News

BikeOak Street separated bikeway is finally underway! Huge thanks to our members, and Supervisors London Breed and Eric Mar for pushing for this to get in the ground now!

Thursday is Bike to Work Day--Ding, Ding!

Bike to Work DayThis Thursday, May 9, thousands of people will pedal their way to the office as part of the 19th Annual San Francisco Bay Area Bike to Work Day. And we hope you’ll be one of them! Whether you bike every day, or you’re just getting “rolling,” join us for the biggest biking day of the year.

Bike to Work Day is the day of the year when all eyes are on the huge and growing number (71% in just five years) of people biking in San Francisco. It’s a chance for the City officials and Mayor to take note of what we see every day: huge numbers of people biking in San Francisco. And it’s a chance for your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition to highlight—on the steps of City Hall and in the media—why you need more safe bikeways, smooth pavement and secure bike parking.

Here are five ways you can join in on the big day!

  1. Join or Renew your SF Bicycle Coalition Membership: This is the SF Bicycle Coalition’s biggest membership day of the year, and it helps fuels all of our advocacy throughout the whole year! Anyone who joins will get a limited-edition Bike to Work Day 2013 tote bag perfect for shopping trips. So bring a friend and sign up/renew on Bike to Work Day!

  2. Fuel up at an Energizer Station: Your SF Bicycle Coalition has set up 26 -- that’s right, more than two dozen! -- Energizer Stations around the city. Pedal by and pick up your Bike to Work Day bag, get high-fives from one of our 160 volunteers, and join or renew while you’re there. Many stations will have local bike shops doing basic bike repairs, too, so you and your bike can pedal off happier than when you left the house. Check out the Energizer Station Map Here.

  3. Ride With Your Supervisor: Join your Supervisor and neighbors on a leisurely bike ride downtown together. Commuter Convoys leave from each of the 11 districts at 7:45AM for the 2013 Bike to Work Day Press Event at 8:30AM. Heading down the Peninsula? Join the SF2G crew riding south at 6:30AM. This is your chance to celebrate biking with your neighbors and City leaders. Check out the locations.

  4. Make Your Commute “Count!” Pedal on by the  Bike Counter on Market Street between 9th and 10th Streets and have your "commute count" on the big biking day! The innovative counter will be unveiled for Bike to Work Day! The SF Bicycle Coalition helped secure funding for this innovative counter and we’re excited to see the daily and yearly growth of biking on our busiest corridor. Bikes Count! All Commuter Convoys will ride past the counter.

  5. Take the Dress Up Challenge: If you bike every day, make Bike to Work Day special by dressing to the nines! Nothing says classy like a well-dressed person on a bike. When people ask you why you're all dressed up, tell them it is Bike to Work Day!  Share your bikey style #dressupBTWD.

Speak Up to End BART Rush-Hour Bike Ban

Bikes on BARTExciting news! The BART Board of Directors is ready to vote on ending the Rush-Hour Bike Ban -- and we need you to speak up! Following two largely uneventful (no news is good news!) pilot programs that allowed bikes on BART at all times, we are calling on the BART Board of Directors to lift the blackout ban in its entirety.

On Bike to Work Day, May 9th, the Board of Directors will hear public comment on this important issue. We are asking SF Bicycle Coalition members to attend this first hearing in Downtown Oakland at 10:00 AM. Please RSVP to marc@sfbike.org if you can attend.  Can’t make the meeting? That’s OK.  You can voice your support through email, too. Find out more and send in your letter of support at sfbike.org/bart!

And just this week, BART released its survey results from the full-week pilot. The results were really promising for opening up all day access: 81% of riders felt there was enough room with allowing bikes on and 77% of people said they’d like to see the rush-hour restrictions lifted!

Masonic Avenue Funding Decisions Approach

The SFMTA’s approval last September of the Masonic Avenue Complete Streets project was the culmination of an unprecedented community-led initiative to make Masonic the safe and appealing thoroughfare the neighborhood deserves. Six years of collaborative effort, dozens of neighborhood associations gatherings, thousands of distributed flyers and newsletters and three official community meetings led to the unassailable agreement that public safety required the proposed improvements. Now more than ever, as funding decisions start to be made, the project requires your help to come closer to fruition. Email decision makers today to express your support for a safer Masonic today! Visit sfbike.org/masonic for more details about this project.

Polk Street - Join our Committee

Safe Polk, Thriving PolkThanks to the hundreds of members who came out to last week’s SFMTA Polk Street Open House meetings. We heard lots of members supporting separated bikeways, sharing stories about crashes and near misses on Polk, but also heard a lot of support for the status quo proposal to not create a dedicated bikeway on Polk Street.

We need you to give your input and speak up for safety on Polk Street.

  1. Take the SFMTA survey - if you missed last week’s Open Houses, click here to take the SFMTA survey on which design you prefer: sfmta.com/polk.
  2. Join our Polk Street Committee - We’re hearing lots of members concerned about the design proposals for Polk Street and interested in helping build support. We’re holding a meeting on Tuesday, May 14 from 6-7:30PM at the SF Bicycle Coalition Office (833 Market, 10th Floor) to get your input on the designs and help us further develop and execute our community outreach and advocacy strategy for a safer Polk Street. Join us and get involved.

Bike to School Week - Now 30% Bigger

Safe Routes to School and your SF Bicycle Coalition worked very hard this year to support our biggest Bike to School event yet.  We increased the number of rider "Goodie Bags" and moved the date closer to the sunnier weather of Bike to Work Day in May. We went from Bike to School "Day" to Bike to School Week and had 30% more schools signed up. There are more changes, but the biggest one so far is that we've already gone past our goal of 2500 youth and adult riders to over 2,800. That’s a 30% increase in our biggest ride year and we still have, you guessed it 30% more schools that have yet to send in their stats!

What’s also fun this is that we are enjoying a moment before National Bike to School Day on May 8, 2013 where we are the leading Bike to School city in the country, edging out Anchorage, Alaska who had 38 school celebrations for last year's National Bike to School Day. Who knows if San Francisco will be the top city this year, but we do have the real rewards already. The smiles, memories, photos, opportunities to get active every day going to and from school. Thank you to everyone who made this year’s event a success.

Support Our Climate Riders

Frankie RidolfiThis year, the Climate Ride will pedal through California’s north coast on May 19-23, and 19 people will be riding to benefit the SF Bicycle Coalition. Our riders need your help supporting the all causes they ride for: bicycle advocacy, sustainability and environmentally focused organizations.

Frankie Ridolfi is a first time Climate Rider who has chosen the SF Bicycle Coalition as one of his beneficiaries. He’s tapping into one of his passions to raise money: Frankie is an experienced book-binder, and for every $25 donated to his campaign, he’ll enter your name into a raffle for a hand-bound leather journal. Find out why he’s riding.

Registration is open for the New York to DC ride this Fall. Sign up today for this green conference on wheels.

Join our Neighborhood Committees and Help Improve SF!

In an effort to develop deeper connections and empower our members, we are establishing over the next months Neighborhood Committees in a few key areas that can most benefit from active member participation and a local voice. Early in June, we will hold our first Neighborhood Committee meeting in the Mission. If you are a member interested in improving bicycling in this neighborhood, email chema@sfbike.org.
