BART Lifts Rush-Hour Bike Ban for Five Months!

Bikes on BARTBig news for bikes on BART! On Thursday night, BART Board of Directors voted to hold a five-month trial, allowing bicycles on trains during all hours of the day, and removing a key obstacle to regional travel by bike. The five-month lift of the “bike blackout” will run July 1-December 1. In November, BART will evaluate the long pilot, and if all is going well, they’ll lift the ban completely!

Thank you to the more than 500 people who sent in letters of support for lifting the ban. Your advocacy helped bring about this momentous decision.

Thursday’s BART vote comes after two successful pilots: Fridays in August and a weeklong March pilot. After the most recent pilot in March, a survey of BART riders showed 77% in support of eliminating the bike blackout period. While the bike blackout is lifted for five months, bikes will still not be allowed on the first three cars of the train during rush-hour.

We know that opening up more access for bikes on BART is a key issue for our members. That’s why your SF Bicycle Coalition has been working for decades to win you more access. In 1972, we got the first bikes on board; in 1997, we helped eliminate the pesky bike permit; and more recently, we helped usher in the two successful pilots.

This long-term work is only made possible by our member support. If this ban will improve your life -- whether it means more time on your bike, or being able to spend more time with your loved ones -- join the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. With your membership, together we will win more monumental victories like this one!

What an accomplishment!

Video: Klunkerz

Klunkerz videoMarin County is the birthplace of mountain biking. In the 1960s, pioneers like Gary Fisher and Joe Breeze bombed Mt. Tam on their rugged single speed cruisers--no shocks, no clipless pedals and no inhibitions. On June 9, you can join Gary and your SF Bicycle Coalition for a more modern, but still incredibly fun, mountain bike ride in Marin. For now, whet your mountain bike appetite with this vintage footage of the early days of Klunkerz.
