Dear Kevin, Biker Bulletin News
Sunday Streets is in the Mission this weekend! Take Action: RSVP for Polk Street Community Meetings"What we have committed to doing is developing additional options that would entail less parking loss. There may be some trade-offs in terms of some of the safety or other benefits." - Ed Reiskin, Director, Municipal Transportation Agency at a recent SFMTA Board Meeting Is your safety a trade-off? We don’t think it should be. Polk Street is one of the most dangerous streets for people biking and walking. Speak up for safety improvements at Polk Street Community meetings. This may be the last chance to weigh in on this project. We need hundreds of SF Bicycle Coalition members and supporters like yourself to be there. Let us know that you’ll be attending the upcoming Polk Street Improvement Project meetings to speak up for safe walking and biking on Polk Street.
Act Now for a Better Market Street (before 2019!)As you know, Market Street, one of the busiest biking streets in the country, is broken. Crumbling pavement, separated bikeways are only for a few blocks and you are constantly vying for space with busses, taxis and cars. AND the City is saying that you need to wait until 2019 for this to get better! The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition believes you deserve better. Give a special tax-deductible gift of $10, $25 or $100 so we can have all we need to push the City to do more for your bicycle safety and enjoyment this year. Imagine how good you’ll feel, pedaling on a smoother Market Street, and knowing that you made it happen! Fell and Oak Bikeway Delays ContinueYet another week has passed for the thousands biking on Fell and Oak streets. Assurances continue to come from the SFMTA that progress is being made, with safe-hit posts on Fell and striping changes on Baker expected this week, but people riding on both streets still have to contend with fast-moving vehicular traffic. Passionate appeals were made last week by members as well as the Office of Supervisor Eric Mar, joining the ranks of NOPNA and Supervisor London Breed in expressing their disappointment at the delays and accompanying peril to public safety they create. Follow their suit and send your own e-mail about the delays or contact chema@sfbike.org if you are interested in speaking up for public safety at the next SFMTA Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, April 16. Rainbows and Sparkles Coming to Castro Street! The Castro Street Design Revised Conceptual Design was released last week and while the proposed design is lacking in many new bicycle amenities, there are some exciting bike improvements, like enhanced access to 17th Street westbound from Market Street. Much needed bike parking is absent from the proposed design and the Workshop 2 Survey–due this Friday, April 12–is your opportunity to give feedback on the design, including the great looking rainbow crosswalk markings and sidewalk mica sparkles. Video: Americans Are Driving LessCheck out this great Streetsfilm about driving trends in America over the last eight years. Is it gas prices that are making this switch? Bike infrastructure? Carshare? Or just a cultural shift to other modes? We’ve seen it here in San Francisco, where car ownership is dropping every year, and more and more San Francisco teenagers are choosing transit, walking and bikes to get around. Find out more in this film. Upcoming EventsCheck out our online calendar of events. To add your bike event to our calendar, simply email the details to us.
