Women’s History Month

In honor of women’s history month, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is stepping up our efforts to get even more women on bike. Today, women make up 35% of San Francisco bike riders—and that number’s growing every day.

This month, we’re hosting for two women-only Intro to Urban Cycling classes. If you or a woman you know wants to start biking, invite them to take one of these classes. RSVP for the March 24 or March 27 class! In the words of Frances E Willard, “She who succeeds in gaining the mastery of the bicycle will gain the mastery of life."

Did you know that the bicycle has and continues to be a tool of women’s liberation, and was key in the suffragette movement? Learn more about the history of women and the bicycle on our rec ride through San Francisco women’s history on Saturday, March 23. RSVP for the free ride.

Bring Bike Sharing to San Francisco in 2014

Have you ridden bike share in other cities like DC, London, Paris, Mexico City or Montreal and wondered why we don't have one here? Or have you heard the excitement of friends and family in New York, Chicago, Portland and beyond about the big bike sharing systems soon to launch in those cities? San Francisco can and should have a full-scale bike sharing system, too.

Supervisor Scott Wiener has introduced a resolution at the Board of Supervisors calling for the launch of a full-scale bike share system in San Francisco in 2014, with expansion to the region soon thereafter. This resolution is a wonderful opportunity for you to let your Supervisor know that you want to see bike share in San Francisco. Tweet or Facebook your Supervisor today to let them know that you want to see a full-scale bike share system in San Francisco in 2014. Read more about bike share here.

We need you to Volunteer with Bikes on BART!

The much-anticipated Bikes on BART pilot is only one week away, and we need your help to make sure it’s a success. BART will lift the bike blackout for five consecutive days, March 18-22. We have morning and afternoon shifts remaining Tuesday-Thursday (Monday and Friday shifts are now full). We’ve had some great volunteers sign up to help with this pilot, but we still need more. Please sign up today to be a part of this crucial pilot. We can’t do it without you!

Five Ways to be an Effective Community Advocate this Week

  • Send in a support letter for 2nd, Polk, and Market streets - The city will be deciding on proposed improvements to 2nd Street, Polk Street and Market Street later this year. Now is the critical time to send in a support letter if you haven’t already. Click on the project page for our 2nd Street, Polk Street, or Market Street to get started.
  • Attend an SFMTA Board Hearing - does it seem like the projects you've been advocating for seem to be continually delayed? Come to an SFMTA Board hearing to express concern that crucial projects like Fell and Oak streets and the Polk Street contraflow bike lane are facing consistent delays. Contact chema@sfbike.org if you can make either the March 19 or April 2nd Board Hearing to speak up.
  • Attend a community meeting on Polk St - Do you live in the Middle Polk Street neighborhood (California to Broadway, Leavenworth to Van Ness) and support a safer and more attractive Polk Street? Attend the Middle Polk Neighborhood Association meeting on March 18 at 630pm to talk to your neighbors about ideas proposed by the SFMTA. See our Polk Street page for more information.
  • Become a Bicycle Ambassador - Attend one of our fun and informative Bicycle Ambassador trainings and become deputized to rally support in the bike lane or at community events. Upcoming trainings are scheduled for the evenings of Tuesday, April 2 amd Thursday, April 25. RSVP to margaret@sfbike.org if you’d like to attend!
  • Join a Love Your Lanes Survey Ride - We have finished about half of our Love Lanes survey bike rides and are collecting great ideas for bikeway improvements all across San Francisco. Next up - our District 2 ride on March 18 will look at ideas to make biking in the Marina, Cow Hollow, Presidio and Golden Gate Bridge even better. RSVP today.

"Transit really moves...packed with the kind of lovely flashes that any urban dweller will recognize." (San Francisco Chronicle)

Video: Voices form the National Women’s Bicycling Forum

San Francisco Bicycle Coalition staff just got back from the National Bicycling Summit in Washington DC. A section of the conference was devoted to the Women’s Bicycling Forum, which was started last year to address issues related to women and biking and to encourage more women to get in the saddle and out on the streets. Our Executive Director, Leah Shahum, spoke at the event, inspiring the crowds with talks about the growing number of women starting to bike in SF. Watch this great Streetfilm to learn more about the Women's Bicycling Forum and about efforts to get more women riding.
