Support Bike Improvements on Polk Street

We've heard from our members and people who ride Polk Street every day that Polk needs smoother pavement, more dedicated bike space, slower vehicle speeds and more. We've heard that biking on Polk Street can be a harrowing experience and some of the crossings (like at Broadway) can be downright dangerous. We've heard you and now we need to make sure the City has heard you.

Please send in a support letter today and support the SFMTA's work to make Polk Street safer.

We've seen some unfortunate posters on some shops on Polk Street spreading incorrect information about the project impacts. This week, the SF Bicycle Coalition is meeting with some of the neighbors who have expressed concern and are going door-to-door to the more than 200 business on Polk Street to talk about the project, and share why our members think that more people biking and walking is good for business. See sfbike.org/POLK for ways to find out the facts and support this project.

See You at Sunday Streets This Weekend!

The days are getting longer, the sun is shining brighter and Sunday Streets has begun! Kick off the first event of the season with us on the Embarcadero. This Sunday, Fisherman's Wharf to Pier 52 will be transformed into open space for people˜ to walk, run, skip, jump, bike, and play! And we want you there! More details

Complimentary valet bicycle parking provided by the SF Bicycle Coalition. Three locations: Fisherman's Wharf (Embarcadero at Mason), Pier 39, and the Ferry Building (South-side). To volunteer to valet park bicycles emailmargaret@sfbike.org.

And, as always, we'll be hosting our Freedom from Training Wheels Workshop -- at Pier 7! We can help children of any age learn to scoot, balance, and pedal! We will provide helmets for everyone to borrow, push-bikes for children up to the age of 5, and have tools on hand to remove training wheels and pedals for any older child who brings their bike! Our skilled volunteers will be ready to help parents get their kids rolling any time between 11AM and 3PM at Pier 7.

Just Two Weeks until the Bikes on BART Pilot!

Think how wonderful it would be if you could bring your bike on BART all day, everyday. This crucial pilot is right around the corner, and there's no way for it to happen without your help. We need your support to make this pilot a success. Volunteer shifts are two hours, and morning and afternoon shifts are available. Want to volunteer with a friend? Super! Just indicate that in the comments section of the sign-up form. You could be a part of making Bikes on BART a reality for everyone. Don't wait! Sign up today!

Join us for our Bicycle Ambassador Training, March 12

Bicycle Ambassadors are some of our most treasured volunteers the SF Bicycle Coalition has. If you're interested in volunteering at Service Stations, spreading the word about our work, and helping our organization grow, then this training is a must! Learn ways to engage people, how to sign up new members and more. Contact margaret@sfbike.org to sign up. Be sure to bring up your bike. Looking forward to seeing you there! (Must be current or former member to attend)

Updates on JFK Drive Bikeway Findings

The Preliminary Evaluation of the John F. Kennedy Drive Separated Bikeway was released by the SFMTA late last year and we are excited to see that most people surveyed like the new bikeway configuration. An additional result of the new design is reduced motor vehicles speeds, with decreases of up to 10%. Street designs that reduce vehicle speed are one of the most important steps in improving safety for everyone, particularly for pedestrians and people on bikes. We nonetheless acknowledges that San Francisco's first parking-separated bikeway was met with some initial confusion. Visit our Project Page for tips on riding the newly upgraded JFK Drive.

Redwoods, and Hills and Ocean, Oh My!

The California Climate Ride starts on May 19th -- grab your spot today! This ride is an intimate, fully-supported five day, 320-mile pedal from the redwoods of Fortuna to the magnificent urban San Francisco landscape. You will be on an adventure of a lifetime with a community of 100 bicycle enthusiasts, young and old, on this amazing fundraising ride.

Designate the SF Bicycle Coalition as your beneficiary and you won't have to go it alone -- you'll have a whole team of support to help you reach your training and fundraising goals. We'll help you spread the word about your ride, your fundraisers and connect you with training rides all over the Bay Area. Send tracy@sfbike.org your registration confirmation to get started!

Video: From the Netherlands to America:
Translating the World's Best Bikeway Designs

When you think about the best country for biking, chances are you think of The Netherlands. As bicycle advocates, we have been looking to The Netherlands as an example for years. But thankfully we're having to look less across the water, and more to other leading American biking cities. Here's a great new Streetfilm about how to take the lessons of the Netherlands and apply them in America.
