BART Pilot Ends - Let’s Make it Permanent!

Thanks to the huge numbers of people who volunteered as ambassadors in BART stations during last week’s second bikes on BART pilot! We heard from many of you both how much the pilot made your life easier and better, from being able to spend more time with your children to feeling safer at night. We’ve been sharing your stories with key decision makers. People are listening: Today Supervisor John Avalos will be introducing a resolution at the Board of Supervisors calling on BART to lift the ban on bikes on BART.

We will hopefully soon have the opportunity to make the case directly to the BART Board of Directors to permanently lift the ban, and will need your help to share your stories about why bikes on BART means so much to you. In the meantime, please don’t forget to fill out the official BART survey about the pilot here.

Polk Street: A Turning Point for Safer Streets?

If someone walking or biking on a street in your neighborhood was hit by an automobile or truck driver once a month, would you support making it safer? This is the reality on Polk Street today, and is a key reason why the SFMTA has been working hard for many months to engage community members to reimagine this iconic commercial corridor and biking route

But the City's efforts are being threatened -- loudly and insistently -- by an extremely vocal band of merchants and residents focused solely on the street's car parking numbers, no matter what the safety implications. As a result, the SFMTA has agreed to present more Polk Street options that minimize parking loss at the next community meeting, in April.

If you want your safety to be taken seriously, and to finally have a safe, comfortable way to get from the center of the city to points north -- without having to climb major hills or brave large streets full of speeding cars -- you must speak up now. Send a letter of support today, before the City decides that your safety is not important. The opponents of this project will not stop; they are loud, organized and determined. Don't let them treat your safety as an afterthought. Write a letter today!

Announcing Over a Dozen New Bike Safety Classes

We’ve just announced over a dozen bike safety workshops all across the city, and we’re inviting you to attend. Whether you’re a daily commuter or still feel like you need some help understanding how best to share the road with motor vehicles, these in-class presentations are right for you. We also host Family Biking Workshops to help get families riding together, more often.

On Wednesday, we will close Women’s History Month with a 1-hour Women’s Only class at St. Luke’s Hospital; then we kick-off our Bike to School Week and Bike to Work Day encouragement with classes for parents and commuters throughout April!

In 2012, we educated over 4,800 people on how to safely bike, walk, and drive, and 2013 is already shaping up to be another blockbuster year. Find out about all of our education programs and sign-up for the free class of your choice at sfbike.org/education!

Support the Fell and Oak Project, Speak Up on April 2nd!

In spite of strong support from all stakeholders, from Supervisor Breed to neighborhood associations, the Fell and Oak Safety Project is still plagued by delays and slipping deadlines. We are looking for motivated members to come to the next SFMTA Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, April 2 at 1:00 pm at City Hall and request an expedited installation of physical separation on the partially completed Fell Street bikeway by Bike to Work Day on May 9 and an accelerated timetable for the Oak bikeway. Contact chema@sfbike.org if you are interested in lending your support to this critical public safety project.

Great News for Fans of McLaren Park!

After several weeks of multilingual community outreach in the neighborhoods surrounding the beautiful McLaren Park, we are happy to announce that the one sided roadway option for Mansell Street was selected by the community as their preferred design. The one sided roadway features a two-way separated bikeway and will provide maximum separation between pedestrians, people on bikes and fast-moving traffic between Brazil and University Street. We will continue working to ensure that the final design is the safest and most convenient for our members and all people biking through McLaren park.
