Polk Street: A Turning Point for Safer Streets?
If someone walking or biking on a street in your neighborhood was hit by an automobile or truck driver once a month, would you support making it safer? This is the reality on Polk Street today, and is a key reason why the SFMTA has been working hard for many months to engage community members to reimagine this iconic commercial corridor and biking route But the City's efforts are being threatened -- loudly and insistently -- by an extremely vocal band of merchants and residents focused solely on the street's car parking numbers, no matter what the safety implications. As a result, the SFMTA has agreed to present more Polk Street options that minimize parking loss at the next community meeting, in April. If you want your safety to be taken seriously, and to finally have a safe, comfortable way to get from the center of the city to points north -- without having to climb major hills or brave large streets full of speeding cars -- you must speak up now. Send a letter of support today, before the City decides that your safety is not important. The opponents of this project will not stop; they are loud, organized and determined. Support the Fell and Oak Project, Speak Up on April 2nd!In spite of strong support from all stakeholders, from Supervisor Breed to neighborhood associations, the Fell and Oak Safety Project is still plagued by delays and slipping deadlines. We are looking for motivated members to come to the next SFMTA Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, April 2 at 1:00 pm at City Hall and request an expedited installation of physical separation on the partially completed Fell Street bikeway by Bike to Work Day on May 9 and an accelerated timetable for the Oak bikeway. Great News for Fans of McLaren Park!After several weeks of multilingual community outreach in the neighborhoods surrounding the beautiful McLaren Park, we are happy to announce that the one sided roadway option for Mansell Street was selected by the community as their preferred design. The one sided roadway features a two-way separated bikeway and will provide maximum separation between pedestrians, people on bikes and fast-moving traffic between Brazil and University Street. We will continue working to ensure that the final design is the safest and most convenient for our members and all people biking through McLaren park. Intro to Safe Biking for Women In honor of Women's History Month, the SF Bicycle Coalition will be hosting a one-hour workshop on safe bicycling specific to women. Come learn about types of bikes, the rules of the road, and how to make your bike comfortable for everyday riding, including grocery shopping. All skill levels welcome and no bike necessary. This eleven member committee meets once a month and advises the Board of Supervisors on all matters bicycle. Tuesday, April 2ndBike To Work Day Volunteer Training Volunteers are the heart and soul and muscle and sinew of Bike to Work Day, and we want YOU to come volunteer with us this year! Come to one of our Bicycle Ambassador trainings to get up to date on what’s going on with the SF Bicycle Coalition, and to learn how to sign up new members. This training will also prepare you to volunteer at races, festivals, Service Stations, and other events.
