Market Street Needs Improvements Now! You may have heard the news that the City's plans to improve Market Street have faltered again - this project originally promised smooth pavement and MUNI, bike and pedestrian improvements in 2013. But we're now hearing that the project may be delayed to 2017 ground-breaking and 2019 or later for implementation. Market Street needs improvements now! The SF Bicycle Coalition is concerned that the Better Market Street project continues to lag and that safety improvements for bikes might not be in the scope. The "Better Market Street" project has introduced an option to divert people on bikes onto Mission Street, and make minimal safety upgrades to Market Street. Improving Mission Street in addition to Market Street for bicycling is very appealing, just as we have long sought upgrades to the bike lanes on Folsom and Howard Streets. But the demand for safe and comfortable biking on Market Street for all kinds of people remains strong and will only grow stronger in the coming years and the city must address this quickly. Bike to School Week Poster Contest and Internship  Breathe easy, there is still time to send that artwork in. We've extended the Bike to School Week Poster Contest deadline to 2/15 for sending in pre K-12th grade artwork on the theme of "We Like to Bike!". Valencia St. Bike Detour Update: St. Luke's Construction For commuters on Valencia Street south of Cesar Chavez, construction has been an ongoing fact of life. In June, we worked hard to ensure bike traffic could safely and easily roll across Cesar Chavez. Now, the construction project has moved to the intersection of Duncan, Tiffany, and Valencia. But, there's good news: the construction will be cleared by the end of February!
Thanks to a tip from a member about confusing signage, your SF Bicycle Coalition staff met on-site with the contractor and SFDPW staff last week. The contractor has since removed the confusing signs, added additional signage for bike traffic, and will be continuing their efforts to keep bike traffic flowing through the area. For the next few weeks, be sure to go slow in the area and follow directions from the flagman -- you may be required to dismount and walk on the sidewalk. While we understand dismounting might not be the most convenient, it's much better than the original plan to shut the intersection to all traffic, and re-route bike traffic to the scary high-speed traffic of San Jose Avenue or Mission Street!
This smoother detour planning is thanks to the years of planning and coordination of your SF Bicycle Coalition staff. We know that keeping a watchful eye on construction is extremely important for your daily commute, but this less-than-glamourous work can't be funded by grants or contracts -- we need the support of people like you. Looking Good, Bike Lovers: Love on Wheels Photos  Last Wednesday Public Works was filled with equal parts punk-rock glam and heart palpitations as our annual Love on Wheels Bicycling Dating Game rolled into the night. Congratulations to all of our flirty, fabulous and punny contestants, and huge thanks to everyone who came out to the event as well as to our nearly 50 volunteers who worked hard to make the night a success.

Video: So God Created Transit  If you watched the Superbowl and the multi-million dollar ad campaigns that went with it, you probably saw (and maybe shed a tear) for the "So God Made a Farmer" commercial. As you'd learn at the end, it was actually a commercial for Dodge trucks. In response to the God Made a Farmer commercial, Diana Lind, editor of Next City, made a heart-warming commercial of her own: So God Created Transit. Check out this great (and tear-jerking) ad for transit. Anyone want to create the bicycle version of this ad?

Sunday, February 17th Urban Bicycling Workshop: Traffic Skills 101-1
10:00 - 2:00 | JCC SF (3200 California St.) This introductory course is perfect for anyone who wants to be more comfortable riding. This four-hour, in-classroom course will cover the basics on how to choose the right bike and properly fit a helmet as well as tips for the safest ways to ride in traffic. You'll also learn techniques to avoid or handle street hazards and emergency maneuvers along with the best way to lock up your bike and how to use a bike in combination with public transit, and biking rights and responsibilities. This free class, funded in partnership with the SFMTA & SFCTA, is open to adults and anyone over 14 years of age; preregistration is required. Indoor bike parking provided! 2-5PM | Eric Quezada Center 518 Valencia St. Bicis for the people, People Organizing to Demand Environmental (PODER) and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition are teaming up to make City reclaimed bikes availble to community members. Volunteers will be on hand to teach repair and bike safety skills.
